For 2007, more features have been included as standard equipment as a result of Jaguar increasing the base price over the 2006 model. Standard on the 3.0 Sedan is a power tilt/slide moonroof, a split/folding rear seat, and Dynamic Stability Control. Two packages-Sport and VDP (Vanden Plas)-have been discontinued on the 3.0 Sedan, to be replaced with a high-content Luxury package that includes leather-trimmed seats with contrast piping, bright mirror caps, rear tread plates, walnut trim, Reverse Park Control, 17-inch Belize-style wheels, power seats, auto headlamps, and other luxury features.
The X-Type serves as the entry-level model for Jaguar. There are only two models in the lineup: the 3.0-liter sedan powered by a 227-hp V-6 engine that makes 206 lb.-ft. of torque, and the Sportwagon, which utilizes the same powerplant. Performance is adequate, as Jaguar reports 0-60 mph times in the 7-second range. The V-6 is matched to a 5-speed transmission. Underneath the body of the X-Type is a MacPherson strut front suspension and a rear multi-link design to provide a comfortable ride with excellent handling characteristics. Both sedan and Sportwagon models also feature standard all-wheel-drive capabilities for traction in slippery conditions.
The Sportwagon is a rare beast in this day and age when crossover vehicles and SUVs have become very popular. Still, for those who want the handling and performance of a sedan but also need cargo- and people-hauling capabilities, the wagon might be a good choice. From the B-pillar (where the front and rear doors meet) forward, the wagon and sedan share the same design, with sculpted forms and quad elliptical headlights. To make sure everyone knows they are Jaguars, the famous Jaguar cat, known as the "leaper," adorns the front of the hood. The Sportwagon differs in design with an elongated roof and taller upper rear side door profiles with rear quarter windows.
Inside, occupants are treated to typical Jaguar style: leather seats, numerous power features, an upscale audio system, and real wood veneers as accent trim. Options include a DVD-based navigation system, Sirius Satellite Radio, and Bluetooth hands-free phone capability. Safety has not been left out of the equation, either; the X-Type features 3-point seat belts and front, side, and side curtain air bags, as well as a driver's side knee bolster area for added protection. Anti-lock brakes are also standard and come with Electronic Brake force Distribution, which equally distributes braking force for better stopping capability.
The Jaguar X-Type competes in the Compact Premium Conventional segment, which consists of 15 models. Buyers in this segment look for performance, exterior styling, and quality, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider StudySM and the Escaped Shopper Study.SM
The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM were the BMW 3 Series (120,180 units sold), Acura TL (71,348), and Infiniti G35 (60,741). The Jaguar X-Type sold 5,214 units in 2006, a decrease of 52.3 percent compared to the previous year. Other models offered in the Compact Premium Conventional segment include the Cadillac CTS, Lexus IS Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, and Acura TSX. Joining the segment in 2007 is the Lincoln MKZ.
