Overview
The 2008 Jaguar S-Type leaps into what may be its last year, perhaps replaced by a version of the concept CX-F. The rear-wheel-drive (RWD), 4-door, 5-passenger, midsize luxury sedan is now in its ninth year of the Ford-Jaguar partnership and is a carryover from last year's model. For 2008, changes are minimal, but 18-inch wheels are now standard, and there's a new front bumper design. The S-Type's competition includes the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Lexus GS and Audi A6/S6.

Model Lineup
The 2008 Jaguar S-Type is available in three models: S-Type 3.0, S-Type 4.2, and S-Type R. All models include stability and traction control, 4-wheel ABS, and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The S-Type 3.0 standard equipment list includes a 235-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 engine; 18-inch Triton wheels; cruise control; lightweight aluminum suspension; moonroof; leather seats; 16-way power-adjustable driver and 12-way passenger seats with lumbar; memory driver seat, steering wheel and outside mirrors; wood interior trim; wood- and leather-trimmed steering wheel; dual-zone climate control with pollen air filter; and rear parking assist.

The S-Type 4.2 has a 300-hp, 4.2-liter V-8 engine; 18-inch Vulcan wheels; Xenon headlamps with automatic leveling; rain-sensing windshield wipers; front park control; Alpine premium sound system; DVD-based navigation; Bluetooth wireless technology; leather seats with piping; and bright finish on exterior mirrors, grille and bumper blades.

The S-Type R substitutes the supercharged, 400-hp, 4.2-liter V-8 engine and adds 19-inch Barcelona wheels and R-performance brakes; stainless steel exhaust tips; black window surround; body-colored exterior mirrors, grille, bumper blades and rear spoiler; R-logo accents on leather seats, steering wheel and gearshift knob; and satin mahogany interior wood trim.

Options include 19-inch Barcelona wheels (S-Type 3.0 and S-Type 4.2); radar-based adaptive cruise control; navigation/Bluetooth package; audio connectivity module for iPod or MP3 player; and a rear-seat entertainment system with two screens. An R luxury package is available and includes an electric rear sunblind; leather seats with piping; premium carpeting; burl walnut wood interior trim; leather and wood trim on the steering wheel and shift knob; bright-finish mirror caps, grille surround and side windows; and radar-based adaptive cruise control.

Powertrain
The 2008 Jaguar S-Type 3.0 is powered by a 3.0-liter, multi-port fuel-injected V-6 engine with dual overhead cam (DOHC) that pumps out 235 hp at 6800 rpm and 216 lb.-ft. of torque at 3000 rpm. The S-Type 4.2 gets the 4.2-liter, multi-port fuel-injected V-8 engine with DOHC that rumbles with 300 hp at 6000 rpm and 310 lb.-ft. of torque at 4100 rpm. The S-Type R boasts a supercharged V-8 engine that delivers 500 hp at 6100 rpm and 413 lb.-ft. of torque at 3500 rpm. All engines transfer power through a 6-speed automatic transmission. The S-Type R also has a sport-tuned suspension. EPA fuel economy estimates for the 3.0-liter V-6 engine are 17 mpg city/26 mpg highway. The 4.2-liter V-8 engine gets an EPA-estimated 16 mpg city/24 mpg highway, while the supercharged 4.2-liter V-8 engine estimates are 15 mpg city/22 mpg highway.

Safety
The 2008 Jaguar S-Type is fully equipped with safety features including 6 air bags (dual-stage frontal air bags for driver and front passenger; side curtain head-protection air bags for front and rear occupants; seat-mounted side-impact air bags for front occupants); adaptive restraint technology using ultrasonic sensors to determine which safety system to activate and energy level of air bag deployment if necessary; 3-point safety belts for all occupants; Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) for child safety seats; rear-seat child-safety locks; anti-theft engine immobilizer; vehicle security system; and flip key handheld alarm remote control and panic button. Also standard are ABS, stability and traction control, emergency brake assist, and an electronic parking brake.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2008 Jaguar S-Type has not been rated for frontal crash protection. In NHTSA side-impact tests, the S-Type receives a 4-star (out of 5) rating for front-seat occupants and a 5-star rating for rear-seat occupants. In NHTSA rollover testing, the S-Type receives 5 stars.

Apart from adaptive restraint technology, the 2008 Jaguar S-Type also features DVD-based navigation; Bluetooth wireless technology; one-touch open/close moonroof; and an electric rear sunblind. The standard audio system in the S-Type 3.0 is a 140-watt AM/FM stereo with single in-dash CD player, while the S-Type 4.2 and S-Type R get the 320-watt Alpine premium sound system with AM/FM radio, single in-dash CD player and 6-disc trunk-mounted CD.
