Overview

What's New for 2014:

  • Renamed--formerly known as the Infiniti EX

Introduction
The 2014 Infiniti QX50 is a 5-passenger, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) or all-wheel-drive (AWD) crossover that had previously been referred to as the EX. It is the smallest of Infiniti's utility models, and competes with the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class, and the Volvo XC60.

Models and Features
Shoppers considering the purchase of a 2014 Infiniti QX50 have the choice of two trim levels: base and Journey. Those who opt for the entry-level model won't exactly be dealing with a bare-bones product, as the base model features 18-in. alloy wheels, automatic headlights, heated power-folding outside mirrors, leather upholstery, power front seats with 8-way adjustment for the driver, dual-zone climate control, push-button start, and a 6-speaker sound system with iPod compatibility and satellite radio.

The QX50 Journey goes a bit further upscale courtesy of standard amenities including a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity, power tilt/slide moonroof, heated front seats, and a universal garage door opener.

Options and Packages
A few feature-laden equipment packages are available for the 2014 QX50, though they're only offered on the Journey. Perhaps the most significant of the trio is the safety-oriented Technology package, within which Infiniti has bundled lane-departure warning and prevention systems, intelligent cruise control, forward-collision warning, and a blind-spot monitoring system.

Added creature comforts are the focus of the Premium package, with its navigation system, 11-speaker premium audio system, 360-degree exterior camera display, climate control system with air purification, and Bluetooth streaming audio.

QX50 models equipped with the Premium package can be further upgraded with a Deluxe Touring package consisting of 19-in. alloy wheels, adaptive and auto-leveling HID headlights, memory settings for the driver, power-folding rear seats, and outside mirrors with a reverse tilt-down feature.

Under the Hood
Infiniti equips all 2014 QX50 models with a 3.7-liter V-6 engine that produces 325 horsepower and 267 lb.-ft. of torque, all of which is managed by a standard 7-speed automatic transmission featuring a snow mode and the company's downshift rev-match technology. For optimal performance, Infiniti suggests filling the QX50's fuel tank with premium unleaded gasoline.

Fuel Economy
Typically, adding an AWD system comes at the cost of efficiency, yet that's not really the case with the 2014 Infiniti QX50. According to the EPA, drivers of RWD and AWD QX50s can expect to average 17 mpg in the city and 20 mpg combined; the only difference lies in the highway rating, which is 25 mpg for RWD variants and 24 mpg for models equipped with AWD.

Safety and Ratings
In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 Infiniti QX50 received a rating of "Good"--the Institute's highest--for moderate overlap front-impact protection. As this overview is written, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not rated the crashworthiness of the 2014 Infiniti QX50.

In terms of safety features, the 2014 QX50 is equipped with 4-wheel anti-lock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution, 6 air bags, rearview camera, and front active head restraints.
