Introduction
The 2014 Infiniti Q50 was originally designed to replace the Infiniti G37 Sedan, but changing market conditions have prompted Infiniti to keep the G37 Sedan in production for another year or two, in order to serve as a lower-priced entry-level model. As such, the new Q50 picks up where the G37 leaves off in terms of pricing, and serves as the more modern and advanced choice. It competes against a broad array of models including the Acura TL, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Cadillac ATS, Hyundai Genesis Sedan, Lexus ES, Lexus IS, Lincoln MKZ, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Volvo S60.

Models and Features
The 2014 Infiniti Q50 is offered in two model series designated 3.7 and Hybrid. Within each, Premium and S trim levels are available, and all models are offered with RWD or AWD.

Standard equipment includes dual-zone automatic climate control, Infiniti Intelligent Key passive entry and push-button starting, Infiniti InTouch dual-screen information displays, Bluetooth and Infiniti InTuition connectivity technology, and a reversing camera. The Q50 also has LED headlights and 17-inch aluminum wheels.

The Premium trim level adds heated front seats, a power sunroof, premium sound system, and a universal garage door opener. As applied to the Q50 Hybrid, Premium trim also includes leather seats, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and Direct Adaptive Steering. A heated steering wheel is included for Premium models equipped with the optional AWD system.

Select the S trim level, and the car comes with front sport seats, a sport suspension, sport brakes, and sportier front styling, compared with the Premium trim level. Magnesium paddle shifters and 19-inch aluminum wheels are also included for this version of the Q50.

Options and Packages
For any Q50 model, Infiniti offers upgrades including an Appearance package (black grille, rear spoiler); Cargo package (trunk mat, trunk net, first-aid kit); All-Weather package (upgraded floor mats, water-resistant trunk trim); ambient interior lighting; exterior welcome lighting; stainless steel illuminated doorsill plates; and a cargo tray for the trunk.

The base Q50 3.7 can be optioned with a power sunroof, while the Q50 3.7 Premium is available with leather seats, a spare tire, and 19-inch wheels. An exclusive 17-inch wheel design is offered for the Q50 Hybrid Premium variant. Regardless of powertrain selection, the Q50 Premium and the Q50S models can be upgraded with a navigation system with Infiniti Connection services.

A Deluxe Touring package is offered for both the Q50 3.7 and the Q50 Hybrid. It contains wood interior trim, memory for the driver's settings, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming exterior mirrors, front and rear park-assist sensors, Around View Monitor system, and, for the 3.7 versions, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and Direct Adaptive Steering. For Q50 Hybrid models, this package also contains the contents of the Q50 3.7 model's optional Technology package.

The Technology package includes an Eco Pedal feature designed to help the driver conserve fuel, an Advanced Climate Control system with air purification, and a long list of safety features that is detailed below.

Under the Hood
The Infiniti Q50 3.7 is equipped with a 3.7-liter V-6 engine generating 328 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 269 lb.-ft. of torque at 5,200 rpm. A 3.5-liter V-6 engine is paired with an electric assist motor and a Lithium-ion battery in the Q50 Hybrid model, and together they produce a combined 360 horsepower.

Both models include a 7-speed automatic transmission with a Sport driving mode and Downshift Rev Matching, delivering the power to the rear wheels. An AWD system is optional.

Fuel Economy
The EPA rates the 2014 Infiniti Q50 3.7 models to return a minimum of 19 mpg in the city and a maximum of 30 mpg on the highway. Choose the Q50 Hybrid, and the estimates range from 27 mpg in the city to 36 mpg on the highway. For both models, versions equipped with AWD and/or 19-inch wheels are rated lower than versions with rear-drive and 17-inch wheels.

Safety Ratings and Technology
As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests on the 2014 Q50.

Infiniti offers a comprehensive package of optional safety technologies designed to prevent a collision. For the Q50 3.7 Premium and Q50S 3.7, these features are included in the optional Technology package. For the Q50 Hybrid Premium and Q50S Hybrid, they are included in the Deluxe Touring package.

This collection of features includes Blind Spot Warning and Blind Spot Intervention, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Departure Prevention, Active Lane Assist, Predictive Forward Collision Warning, Forward Emergency Braking, Backup Collision Intervention, full-speed-range adaptive cruise control with Distance Control Assist, an adaptive front-lighting system with High Beam Assist, and Front Pre-Crash Seat Belts.
