What's New for 2014:

  • Available automatic climate control
  • High-performance R-Spec variant
  • Standard telematics system

The 2014 Hyundai Veloster is a 3-door, 4-passenger, front-wheel-drive (FWD) hatchback available in base, Re:Flex, Turbo R-Spec, and Turbo trim levels. Competitors include the Honda Civic coupe, Kia Forte Koup, Mini Cooper, Scion FR-S, Scion tC, Subaru BRZ, and the Volkswagen Beetle.

Models and Features
Hyundai's entry-level Veloster, simply referred to as the base model, is equipped with a generous assortment of amenities, highlights of which include LED headlight accents, heated power outside mirrors, 17-in. alloy wheels, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with integrated audio controls, height-adjustable driver's seat, 196-watt 7-in. touch-screen voice-activated infotainment system with satellite radio and Pandora compatibility, Bluetooth connectivity, and a newly standard telematics system.

Next in the pecking order is the Veloster Re:Flex, home to 18-in. alloy wheels, illuminated door sills, leather upholstery and interior accents, and a 450-watt premium audio system. Next is the 2014 Veloster Turbo R-Spec, which boasts not only a turbocharged engine as well as a sport-tuned chassis, unique shift knob, lower body kit with a rear diffuser, aluminum foot pedals, distinct R-Spec floor mats, and two-tone black/red seat inserts.

Finally, at the top of the Veloster hierarchy is the Turbo version. To differentiate this trim level from the R-Spec Hyundai has added a sport-tuned exhaust, turn signal mirrors, push-button start, and heated front seats with 8-way power adjustment for the driver.

Options and Packages
Though few in number, the 2014 Hyundai Veloster's option packages do provide access to some desirable styling touches and creature comforts. For the base model, upgrades include a Style package that bundles together chrome and piano black exterior trim, power moonroof, premium audio, leatherette upholstery, and aluminum foot pedals, or a Tech package featuring 18-in. alloy wheels, navigation system, automatic headlights, and more.

A Tech package is also available for the Veloster Turbo. In this case, content includes a power moonroof, automatic headlights, climate control, and a navigation system.

Under the Hood
In base form, the 2014 Hyundai Veloster features a direct-injection, 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 138 horsepower and 132 lb.-ft. of torque when mated with a 6-speed manual transmission. A 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox with paddle shifters and integrated hill-start assist is also available on the base Veloster and standard on the Re:Flex; it drops horsepower a smidge to 132.

For the Turbo R-Spec, Hyundai again uses the 1.6-liter engine, albeit with a good bit of boost coming from an attached turbocharger. Together, this combination creates 201 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque. The 6-speed manual is the only transmission option. Specifications for the Veloster Turbo are exactly the same, though buyers of that variant can opt for a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel Economy
If your goal is to acquire the most efficient 2014 Veloster available, direct your attention toward the Re:Flex or a base model fitted with the dual-clutch automatic transmission, both of which offer EPA fuel-economy ratings of 28 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. Drivers who prefer to shift their own gears will see a 2-mpg drop around town and a negligible loss of 1 mpg on the highway.

Enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that, despite delivering extra performance, the Veloster Turbo and Turbo R-Spec models still offer commendable fuel economy, averaging 24 mpg in the city and up to 33 mpg on the freeway.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Hyundai Veloster received an overall rating of 5 (out of 5) stars. As this overview is written, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not provided safety ratings for the 2014 Veloster.

To keep those in and around the car safe, Hyundai equips the Veloster with 6 air bags, 4-wheel anti-lock vented disc brakes and brake assist, and a rearview camera. Rear park-assist sensors are available, as are bright LED taillights.
