Introduction
The 2015 Hyundai Sonata is completely redesigned, except for the Sonata Hybrid, which is essentially the same as it was in 2014. A midsize family sedan, the Sonata competes against a number of similar models including the Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler 200, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Mazda 6, Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy, Toyota Camry, and Volkswagen Passat.

Models and Features
Hyundai sells the redesigned 2015 Sonata in SE, Eco, Sport, Limited, and Sport 2.0T trim levels. The Sonata Hybrid is offered in standard and Limited trim.

The 2015 Sonata Eco adds a more fuel-efficient powertrain plus upgraded interior and exterior trim, a 10-way power driver's seat, and a 5-in. color touch-screen audio system with a reversing camera and Blue Link services.

The Sonata Sport is equipped similar to the Sonata Eco but gets unique styling, 17-in. aluminum wheels, and heated front seats. This version is also equipped with the standard 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine from the Sonata SE.

Choose the Sonata Limited for leather seats, woodgrain interior trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, premium sound system, keyless entry with push-button engine starting, and a hands-free Smart Trunk feature. The Sonata Limited is also equipped with heated front and rear seats, 6-way power front passenger's seat, rear side window sunshades, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, universal garage door opener, and blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert. Unique aluminum wheels, dual exhaust outlets, and LED taillights identify this version.

The Sonata Sport 2.0T features a more powerful turbocharged engine, HID headlights, quad exhaust outlets, and 18-in. aluminum wheels, as well as larger front brakes, sport-tuned suspension, and unique steering designed to deliver more natural feel. Inside, the Sport 2.0T is equipped with a flat-bottom steering wheel, paddle shifters, sport instrumentation, aluminum pedals, and sport leather upholstery.

The Sonata Hybrid Limited adds to the base model's equipment list items such as 17-in. aluminum wheels, upgraded interior trim, leather seats, power driver's seat, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, and a universal garage door opener.

Under the Hood
The Sonata SE, Sport, and Limited are equipped with a 185-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. A turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder making 245 horsepower is standard for the Sport 2.0T. Both of these engines are bolted to a 6-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic manual control. Paddle shifters are included for the Sport 2.0T.

The Sonata Eco gets a turbocharged, 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine making 177 horsepower. Note, however, that it makes 17 lb.-ft. more torque than the standard Sonata SE's engine, spread across the majority of the engine's rev range. That means it should feel stronger than the Sonata's standard engine. Eco models are exclusively offered with a 7-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission.

Hybrids are equipped with a 2.4-liter Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder engine, 35-kW electric motor, Lithium polymer battery, and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Together, they produce 199 horsepower and possess the ability to travel up to 74 mph on electric power alone, according to Hyundai.

Each 2015 Sonata includes a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, and the Sonata Hybrid's battery is covered by a lifetime battery warranty. These are in addition to the 5-year/60,000-mile standard vehicle warranty.

Fuel Economy
Fuel-economy ratings range from a low of 23 mpg in the city for the Sonata Sport 2.0T to a high of 40 mpg on the highway for the Sonata Hybrid. Sonatas equipped with the most popular 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine are rated to return between 24 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway.

Safety and Technology
With the addition of a knee air bag for the driver, the 2015 Sonata is equipped with 7 standard air bags. Next-generation Blue Link service provides SOS Emergency Service, Automatic Collision Notification and, depending on the service plan, the ability to program speed, curfew, and geo-fenced boundary alerts.

Safety-related options include forward-collision, blind-spot, lane-departure, and rear cross-traffic warning systems. The blind-spot warning system includes Lane Change Assist technology that warns the driver when traffic is rapidly approaching in an adjoining lane. Automatic high-beam headlights are also available, along with Smart Cruise Control with full-stop capability and a hands-free Smart Trunk system that automatically pops open when the key fob is within certain proximity for three seconds.

The standard infotainment setup includes Bluetooth, a USB port, and satellite radio. Blue Link is standard for all but the Sonata SE, providing access to Google Destination Search, remote vehicle access functions, and a new Hyundai Assurance Car Care app.

A navigation system with an 8-in. touch-screen display is optional for the Sonata and offers the ability to record/rewind satellite radio broadcasting. The system is compatible with Siri Eyes Free, Pandora, SoundHound, and later this year, Apple CarPlay technologies.
