Exterior FeaturesThe 2012 Hyundai Elantra is a compact sedan and wagon, offered in two different trim levels. Although all Elantra models are gasoline powered, a special partial zero-emissions vehicle (PZEV) version promises lower emissions. While the sedan has recently been redesigned, the Touring (wagon) is still built on the older chassis, which is due to be replaced in 2013. Fifteen-inch steel wheels are standard.
Interior FeaturesThe 2012 Hyundai Elantra offers seating for 5 passengers. Base Elantra models feature cloth upholstery, full power accessories, tilt steering wheel, rear window defroster, and more. Upgraded trim levels feature leather upholstery, heated front seats, keyless entry and ignition, power-operated moonroof, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and other premium features.
Optional FeaturesMajor options on the 2012 Hyundai Elantra include an upgraded audio system, navigation with a touch-screen infotainment interface, and a rearview camera.
Under the HoodHyundai Elantra models are fitted with one engine-a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder rated at 148 horsepower (vehicles sold in California receive a PZEV version of the engine rated at 145 horsepower). While all Elantras come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, a 6-speed automatic is optional, and is standard in the Elantra Limited trim level. All Elantra models are front-wheel drive.
Fuel EconomyEPA fuel-economy figures for the 2012 Hyundai Elantra are:
- Hyundai Elantra with automatic transmission: 29/40 mpg (city/highway)
SafetyStandard safety features of note on the 2012 Hyundai Elantra include side curtain air bags and active head restraints. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not tested the 2012 Elantra, both sedan and wagon. However, in tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Elantra sedan received a "Good" rating-the Institute's highest-for frontal-offset and side-impact crash protection. Roof strength results from the Institute were also "Good."
