A 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard for the Elantra SE Sedan and the Elantra Limited Sedan. It makes 145 horsepower, and is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic manual gear selection and an Eco driving mode. It is available in a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) state of tune, which does not affect horsepower or torque output.
The Elantra Sport Sedan, Elantra Coupe, and the Elantra GT are equipped with a new, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates 173 horsepower (166 hp in PZEV tune). The larger, more powerful engine is offered with the same transmission choices.Fuel Economy
The Elantra's 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine is rated by the EPA to get 27 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway, unless equipped with the SE trim level with the optional automatic transmission, which results in a slight mpg improvement to 28 mpg city/38 mpg highway.
Get the more powerful 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and the Elantra returns 24 mpg city/34 mpg highway. Exceptions include the Elantra GT with the optional automatic, which is rated to get 33 mpg on the highway, and the Elantra Sport Sedan with the optional automatic, which returns 35 mpg on the highway.Safety Ratings and Technology
In testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Hyundai Elantra Sedan and the Elantra GT Hatchback models each receive an overall crash-test rating of 5 stars (out of 5). The NHTSA has not assessed the Elantra Coupe's crashworthiness. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the 2014 Elantra Sedan a "Top Safety Pick" rating. This designation does not apply to the Elantra Coupe or the Elantra GT, which were not tested by the IIHS.
For 2014, all Elantra models have standard blind-spot side mirror designs, and all versions of the car except for the base Elantra SE Sedan are equipped with a standard reversing camera. For Elantras that come with Hyundai's next-generation Blue Link connectivity and services technology, owners enjoy three years of free Automatic Collision Notification and Enhanced Roadside Assistance, and can establish curfew, vehicle speed, and geographic boundary alerts, which are especially helpful when young drivers are in the household.
