Introduction
The 2014 Hyundai Accent is available as a 4-door sedan and a 5-door hatchback, and competes in the subcompact class. It has one of the largest interiors in the segment, and one of the most powerful engines. Competitors include the Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit, Kia Rio, Mazda 2, Nissan Versa, and Toyota Yaris.

Models and Features
The 2014 Accent Sedan is available in GLS trim while the Accent 5-Door is sold in base GS and up-level SE trim levels. Standard equipment for the GS and GLS includes 14-in. wheels, power heated side mirrors with a driver's side blind-spot feature, power windows, power door locks, air conditioning, tilt steering wheel, height-adjustable driver's seat, and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. Hyundai also includes a 6-speaker audio system with satellite radio, a USB port, iPod connection, and an auxiliary audio input jack.

In addition to or instead of these features, the Accent SE 5-Door is equipped with Bluetooth connectivity, 16-in. aluminum wheels, projector beam headlights, LED running lights, fog lights, turn signal indicators in the side mirror housings, and a rear spoiler. This version also receives standard sport-tuned steering, auto-up function for the driver's window, and a sliding center armrest atop a storage console, as well as upgraded interior materials including a leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and a leather-wrapped shift knob.

Options and Packages
A power sunroof is also available for the Accent SE, and the Accent GLS is available with a Premium package containing most of the equipment that comes standard on the Accent SE, except for the sport-tuned steering calibration. Otherwise, Hyundai dealers will install extra-cost accessories from a short menu of upgrades.

Under the Hood
A 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard in every 2014 Accent, generating 138 horsepower. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a 6-speed automatic transmission available as an option. The automatic includes a Shiftronic manual shift feature and an Active Eco system designed to help conserve fuel.

Fuel Economy
Regardless of transmission choice, the 2014 Accent returns 27 mpg in the city. On the highway, the Accent with the manual gearbox gets 38 mpg while the automatic returns 37 mpg.

Safety Ratings and Technology
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Accent receives an overall crash-test rating of 4 stars (out of 5 stars). Note, however, that in the side-impact test, the rating for rear-seat occupant protection is 3 stars, and that the interior door panel struck the crash-test dummy's torso.

The 2014 Accent's diminished side-impact crash-test performance is also evident in assessments conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The side-impact rating is "Acceptable," while ratings for rear-impact injury prevention, roof crush strength, and moderate overlap frontal-impact protection are "Good." Note, though, that in the small overlap frontal-impact test the Accent gets a "Poor" rating.

Hyundai does not offer safety-related options for the Accent. This model cannot be fitted with Blue Link telematics, which includes features such as SOS Emergency Assistance and Automatic Collision Notification. Blue Link also offers a couple of useful items to parents of teenaged drivers, such as Curfew Alert, Speed Alert, and a Geo-Fence boundary alert. Nor can an Accent be upgraded with a reversing camera. If those features are desired, consumers will need to consider the slightly larger Hyundai Elantra.
