What Changed for 2009:Overview
's 50th anniversary, the S2000 roadster was launched in 1999 as a 2000 model
. Designed as a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive, 2-seat roadster only available with a 6-speed manual transmission, it was the most expensive Honda model at the time of its introduction. Enthusiasts adopted the S2000 as a favorite amateur autocross and track racer. The S2000 has essentially remained unchanged throughout its production cycle except for a bump in engine displacement in 2004
and the addition of a second model, the S2000 CR "Club Racer" for the 2008 model year
. Honda says the S2000 is aimed directly at the enthusiast, and that with racing-oriented performance upgrades, the 2009 Honda S2000 CR is essentially a street-legal track car.Model Lineup
The two Honda S2000 models available for 2009 share the same basic chassis, an identical high-revving 4-cylinder engine with a manual transmission, and a near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution. The standard S2000 is equipped with an electrically powered convertible soft top; leather seats; leather-wrapped steering wheel; power windows and door locks; remote keyless entry; air conditioning; interior air filter; AM/FM/CD audio system; wind blocker; outside temperature display; Xenon headlights; and a rear spoiler. Wheels are 17-inch aluminum alloy, with P215/45R17 front tires and P245/40R17 rear tires. The S2000 CR model has aerodynamically tuned front and rear spoilers; quicker steering ratio; sport suspension; and a short-throw shifter. The CR also comes without a folding convertible top: just a removable aluminum hardtop. Cloth seats with suede bolsters, power door locks, and power windows are standard, and the air conditioning, interior air filter and audio system are deleted to save weight. The front tires are the same size, but the rear tires are P255/40R17s and all four of the CR's tires offer more aggressive handling, Honda says.Powertrain
All 2009 Honda S2000s, regardless of model, are equipped with a 2.2-liter 4-cylinder engine. The powerplant is rated at 237 hp at 7800 rpm and 162 lb.-ft. of torque at 6800 rpm. Honda's VTEC variable valve-timing system has been tailored to the high-output, high-rpm (redline is at 8000 rpm), all-aluminum motor. Capable of powering the S2000 from 0-60 mph in less than 6 seconds, the engine still meets California's Low-Emission Vehicle 2 (LEV-2) standards. The sole transmission offering is a close-ratio 6-speed manual sending power to the rear wheels through a Torsen limited-slip differential. EPA fuel-economy estimates are 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway. Honda provides a 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty on the S2000, and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.Safety
Every 2009 Honda S2000 features dual-stage, dual-threshold front air bags for the driver and passenger. Also standard are a tire-pressure monitor, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, traction control, and electronic stability control. Roll bar hoops and reinforced windshield posts add safety to this convertible.
In National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA
) crash tests, the S2000 received a 4-star rating for the driver and passenger in front impacts, a 5-star rating for side impacts, and a 5-star rollover-resistance rating. The S2000 has not been crash tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS
The 2009 Honda S2000 CR offers a quicker steering ratio and a track-oriented suspension with thicker sway bars and firmer springs and dampers. A rear body brace occupies the area housed by the soft top on the base model, resulting in additional rigidity and helping the tires to stay in contact with the road, according to Honda. Compared to the base S2000, the CR is 51 pounds lighter with the hardtop installed and 99 pounds lighter with the hardtop removed. The S2000 CR instrument panel includes a "peak-power indicator." When the engine is operating at peak power, a green light flashes to the right of the digital speedometer.
