Overview

What's New for 2015:

  • Pilot SE trim level

Introduction
The 2015 Honda Pilot is an 8-passenger, 3-row crossover SUV that competes against the larger members of the segment. Primary competitors include the Chevrolet Traverse, Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, Nissan Pathfinder, and Toyota Highlander.

Models and Features
Honda offers the 2015 Pilot in five different trim levels, each available with front-wheel or 4-wheel drive (FWD or 4WD): LX, EX, SE, EX-L, and Touring.

Upgrading from the Pilot LX to the Pilot EX adds remote keyless entry, 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, universal garage door opener, outside temperature display, and a set of 18-in. aluminum wheels.

The Pilot SE is new for 2015, building on Pilot EX equipment with satellite radio, power sunroof, rear-seat DVD entertainment system, 115-volt power outlet, and unique aluminum wheels.

For leather seats, choose the Pilot EX-L, which also adds heated front seats, 4-way power-adjustable front passenger's seat, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and more. Get the 4WD model and the EX-L also comes with heated side mirrors for improved winter visibility. The Pilot EX-L can be optioned with a choice between a rear-seat DVD entertainment system that includes a 115-volt power outlet or a voice-controlled, hard-drive navigation system that is paired with a multi-angle reversing camera, real-time traffic updates, and 15GB of memory for storing your favorite music.

The Pilot Touring sits atop the lineup, featuring both the navigation system and the rear-seat entertainment system, plus memory for the driver's settings, a premium sound system, front and rear park-assist sensors, power-folding side mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators, and roof rails.

Under the Hood
Every 2015 Pilot is equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine generating 250 horsepower. The engine is equipped with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) technology that allows it to operate on fewer cylinders under certain driving conditions in order to conserve fuel.

A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment, delivering the engine's power to the front wheels. A Variable Torque Management 4WD system is optional, able to lock the power split evenly between the front and rear wheels at lower driving speeds in order to improve traction.

Fuel Economy
Choose a Pilot with FWD and the EPA says you can expect to get 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. The Pilot 4WD is rated to return 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway.

Safety and Technology
Every 2015 Honda Pilot is equipped with a reversing camera, but aside from this feature Honda offers none of the enhanced safety technologies that are available on competing models. Even the infotainment system is relatively basic. These factors underscore the SUV's age, and Honda is set to replace the Pilot with a redesigned model for the 2016 model year.
