What's New for 2014:

  • No changes in final year before redesign

The 2014 Honda Pilot is a midsize crossover SUV equipped with three rows of seats. Designed to hold up to 8 people and as much as 87 cu. ft. of cargo with the second and third rows of seats folded down, the 2014 Pilot competes against the Chevrolet Traverse, Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, GMC Acadia, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Mazda CX-9, Nissan Pathfinder, and Toyota Highlander.

Models and Features
Honda offers the 2014 Pilot in LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring trim levels equipped with front-wheel drive or a Variable Torque Management 4-wheel drive (4WD) system.

Upgrade from base LX trim to EX trim and the Pilot is equipped with 18-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, body-color exterior trim, and a 10-way power driver's seat. With the optional 4WD system, the Pilot EX also adds heated exterior mirrors. Choose the Pilot EX-L for leather seats that are heated in front, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 4-way power front passenger's seat, power tailgate, and a power sunroof.

At the top of the 2014 Honda Pilot lineup is the Touring, which features a navigation system with voice-recognition technology, rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and a premium sound system with a 15 GB music hard drive and Song By Voice track retrieval. This version also includes memory for the driver's settings, illuminated steering wheels controls, 115-volt power outlet, and a multi-angle reversing camera that replaces the single-angle camera that is standard for all other Pilots.

Options and Packages
Honda dealers can install a variety of accessories on any 2014 Pilot. The only factory-installed options are reserved for the Pilot EX-L. Buyers selecting this trim level can add a rear-seat DVD entertainment system or a navigation system, but not both. The entertainment system includes a 115-volt power outlet, while the navigation system is equipped with voice-recognition technology, a hard-drive music server, illuminated steering wheel controls, and a multi-angle reversing camera that supplies a 180-degree view of what's behind the Pilot.

Under the Hood
Every 2014 Pilot is equipped with a 250-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine that drives the front wheels through a 5-speed automatic transmission. The engine is equipped with Variable Cylinder Management technology that allows the engine to operate on fewer cylinders under certain driving conditions in order to maximize fuel economy.

A Variable Torque Management 4WD system is optional on each trim level, designed to automatically distribute power to the rear wheels up to a 50/50 front-to-rear split. A Lock button can lock the system in a 50/50 split at low speeds in order to maximize traction.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the 2014 Honda Pilot 2WD is rated to achieve 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, while the 4WD model achieves 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Pilot receives an overall rating of 4 stars (out of 5 stars). Note, however, that the SUV receives either a 4-star rating or a 5-star rating in each individual assessment, including for rollover resistance. As this overview is written, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not tested the 2014 Pilot for small overlap frontal-impact protection. In all other tests, the Pilot earns the highest rating of "Good" from the Institute.

Aside from offering a standard reversing camera and an available multi-angle reversing camera, the 2014 Pilot is unavailable with the same safety-related features found on other Honda models. It is, however, constructed around an Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, which is designed to deflect crash energy away from the passenger compartment.
