Overview

The Honda Insight is a compact, hybrid gasoline-electric vehicle that was first introduced for the 1999 model year. While small in overall stature, and with a unique design, the original Insight, produced through the 2006 model year, earned a fuel economy rating of 61 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. After a three model-year absence, the second-generation Honda Insight debuted for the 2010 model year. More traditionally styled, the new 4-door competes against the Toyota Prius. The 2011 model year welcomes a new base model, including new features and standard stability control.

The 2011 Honda Insight is offered in three different models: Base, LX, and EX. Standard equipment on base models includes cloth upholstery, air conditioning with automatic climate control, full power accessories, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, trip computer, 2-speaker audio system, 15-inch steel wheels, and more. The upgraded Insight LX model adds standard cruise control, floor mats, center armrest and storage compartment, 4-speaker audio system, and an iPod/USB music interface. The Insight EX includes steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles and audio controls, vanity mirrors on the visors, heated exterior mirrors, 15-inch alloy wheels, and the audio system is upgraded to 6 speakers. Major options on the 2011 Honda Insight include Bluetooth phone connectivity and a satellite-based navigation system.

The sole power plant in the 2011 Honda Insight is a hybrid gasoline-electric system featuring a 1.3-liter, 4-cylinder gasoline engine. It is mated to an electric motor that draws electricity from a nickel-metal hydride battery pack. Total combined system output is 98 horsepower, according to Honda. Power is sent to the Insight's front wheels through a standard, continuously variable transmission (CVT). The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 Honda Insight between 40 mpg city and 43 mpg highway.

The 2011 Honda Insight starts at a base price of around $18,200 and tops out with the EX model with Navigation, which starts around $23,200.
