Based on the architecture of the H3, for 2009 Hummer
introduces the H3T, a 5-passenger crew cab pickup with a 5-foot-long bed. The H3T is bigger than a midsize truck, Hummer says, but smaller than a full-size truck, and is offered in five trim levels, with 5-cylinder models and an H3T Alpha edition featuring a V-8 engine. Apart from the all-new H3T, other changes for 2009 include standard Bluetooth wireless capability for hands-free calling, front locking differential (included with the Off-Road Adventure package), hill start assist, and a rearview camera system display on the inside rearview mirror revised to "display on demand" system (replacing the previous mirror slide-out display).Model Lineup
The 2009 Hummer H3 lineup includes the H3 SUV and all-new H3T, with the V-8-powered Alpha series offered on both body styles. Five trims are available: base, Adventure, Luxury, Alpha and H3x
. Base H3 models include keyless entry; power door locks/mirrors; cloth seats; front bucket seats with 8-way power-adjustable driver seat; rear 60/40 split-folding bench seat; manual air conditioning; rear window washer/wiper; AM/FM 6-speaker radio with in-dash single CD player; and 16-inch alloy wheels. The H3x
features a special appearance package, chrome accents, and details such as bright roof crossbows; chrome fuel filler door, brush guard and tubular assist steps; body-color grille and spare tire cover with Hummer logo; 18-inch chrome aluminum wheels with P265/65R18 all-terrain tires; "H3"-embroidered seat headrests; and a Z85 suspension. The H3x
is available on the Alpha model.
The H3T features a crew cab body similar to the H3 from the B-pillar forward. The cab's bed is similar to that of GM's full-size trucks, including the removable tailgate and standard cargo management system. There's a full-size spare tire mounted beneath the bed. Inside, the H3T offers 5-passenger seating, with a 60/40-split rear bench that folds flat for increased storage. The H3T's 134.2-inch wheelbase is 22.3 inches longer than that of the H3 SUV.
The Alpha series, available on H3 and H3T models, is available with cloth (H3T only) or leather (both) interior trim. Standard features on Alpha models with leather-trimmed interior include Bluetooth connectivity; leather-wrapped steering wheel; up-level carpeted floor mats; heated/power-adjustable seats; home remote; lighted vanity mirror; and 18-inch wheels (with the last four also available on cloth-equipped models).
The H3T offers more than 75 specifically-developed Hummer Genuine Accessories, including removable/lockable bed-mounted storage boxes; bed extender; adjustable bike chock to secure motorcycles or mountain bikes; and other accessories to enhance off-road capabilities, exterior styling, and passenger entertainment. GM has also partnered with aftermarket companies to develop more than 50 officially licensed Hummer Accessories, offering a variety of items like hard tonneau covers, winch, Slant Back Bed Cover, and cargo-management solutions like BedSlide and a bed divider.Powertrain
The standard engine in the 2009 Hummer H3 and H3T is a Vortec 3.7-liter I-5 with dual-overhead cam (DOHC) and variable valve timing (VVT), delivering 239 hp at 5800 rpm and 241 lb.-ft. of torque at 4600 rpm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or optional 4-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. In the Alpha series, the power comes from a 5.3-liter V-8 engine from the GM small-block V-8 family, rated at 300 hp at 5200 rpm and 320 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm, and paired with an electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission. The engine has an all-aluminum cylinder block which maintains more desirable front-to-rear weight balance and helps to reduce overall mass, GM says. Higher torsion bar rates and specific shock valving are other features of V-8-powered H3s. Flat towing is enabled on all H3/H3T models. EPA fuel economy for the H3 SUV and H3T 4WD with the 3.7-liter engine is 14 mpg city/18 mpg highway (manual and automatic), and 13 mpg city/16 mpg highway with the 5.3-liter V-8 engine.
Two suspension packages are available on the 2009 Hummer H3 and H3T: standard Z85 heavy-duty handling and trailering, and optional Off-Road Adventure. The Z85 suspension includes 32-inch all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels, heavy-duty shocks, and a 4.56-ratio or 4.10-ratio rear axle. The Off-Road Adventure package includes 33-inch tires, specifically tuned shocks, locking front/rear differentials, cast iron front differential case, 4.03:1 low-range gearing in the transfer case and crawl ratio of 69:1 with the 3.7-liter engine/manual transmission, or 50.6:1 with the 5.3-liter engine. The midsize H3 has full-time, electronically controlled 4WD with standard underbody shielding and brake traction control.Safety
All 2009 Hummer H3 models include standard electronic stability control; 4-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS) with traction control; dual-stage frontal air bags with passenger-sensing system; front and rear head curtain air bags; tire-pressure monitor; and LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) rear child-seat anchors. Optional safety features include a rearview camera system and navigation system. OnStar is standard, with the Turn-by-Turn Navigation feature available as an option.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA
), the 2009 Hummer H3 SUV received a 5-star rating for driver frontal crash protection, and 4 stars in front passenger frontal testing, and a 5-star rating in both side-impact tests. In the agency's rollover testing, the H3 SUV received a 4-star rating. The H3T was not tested. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS
) rated the 2008 Hummer H3 SUV
as "Acceptable" in its frontal offset and side-impact tests, while the rear-seat/head restraints received an overall "Poor" rating.Technology
New for 2009, Bluetooth wireless connectivity for hands-free calling is standard on all Hummer H3 models. The H3 has an optional rearview camera system that uses a rear bumper-mounted camera to provide a view of objects located directly behind the vehicle. A new "picture-in-picture" display gives the driver a more integrated viewing screen for the system. A navigation system is also available as an option. The base radio is a 6-speaker AM/FM unit with in-dash single CD player, while up-level models get Monsoon premium 7-speaker and upgraded stereo systems. XM satellite radio is standard on all 2009 Hummer H3 models. As for other passenger entertainment items, a wide variety is available through Hummer Genuine Accessories.
