Overview

The GMC Yukon XL is a full-size sport utility vehicle built on a truck platform. With the exception of a few cosmetic changes, it is essentially a GMC Yukon that has been extended an additional 20 inches for increased interior room (it also closely resembles the Chevrolet Suburban). The first GMC Yukon XL rolled into showrooms in 1992 (at the time named GMC Suburban). Today's third-generation Yukon XL was introduced in 2007. It offers seating for up to 9 passengers, a choice between rear- or 4-wheel drive (2WD or 4WD), and the option of either a gasoline or a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain. The GMC Yukon XL is essentially a carryover for 2011.

The 2011 GMC Yukon XL is offered in both 1500 and 2500 series. The 1500 is the regular-duty platform, while the 2500 is the heavy-duty model. In addition, there are three trim levels: SLE, SLT, and Denali. The Yukon XL SLE is configured with standard cloth upholstery, tri-zone air conditioning, full power accessories, Bluetooth phone connectivity, 8-speaker audio system, manual 50/50 folding third-row seat, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, 17-inch alloy wheels, and more. The SLT adds leather upholstery, heated outside mirrors, parking sensors, tri-zone automatic climate control, remote vehicle starting, and more. The Yukon XL Denali is loaded with premium accessories including rear air suspension, upgraded audio, and 20-inch polished alloy wheels. Options included 22-inch wheels, power-retractable running boards, third-row screens for the DVD-based entertainment system, and a sunroof.

The 2011 GMC Yukon XL is offered with one of two engines. The standard engine in the 1500 chassis is a 5.3-liter V-8 rated at 320 horsepower. The 2500 chassis receives a 6.0-liter V-8 engine rated at 352 horsepower. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard in both cases, but the transmission in the 2500 has been modified for heavier towing duty. Consumers are offered a choice of 2WD- or 4WD. When properly equipped, the 2011 GMC Yukon XL is capable of towing 9,600 pounds, according to GMC. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 GMC Yukon XL between 10 mpg city and 21 mpg highway, depending on chassis, engine and transmission.

The 2011 GMC Yukon XL SLE 2WD starts at a base price of around $43,000, and the model range tops out with the Yukon XL Denali, which starts at around $57,000.
