Overview

The GMC Yukon is a full-size sport utility vehicle built on a truck platform. With the exception of a few cosmetic changes and some additional standard equipment, it is essentially identical to the Chevrolet Tahoe. The first GMC Yukon rolled into showrooms in 1992. Today's third-generation Yukon was introduced in 2007. It offers seating for up to 9 passengers, a choice between rear- or 4-wheel drive (2WD or 4WD), and the option of either a gasoline or a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain. The GMC Yukon is essentially a carryover for 2011.

The 2011 GMC Yukon is offered in three trim levels: SLE, SLT, and Denali. The Yukon SLE is configured with standard cloth upholstery, tri-zone air conditioning, full power accessories, Bluetooth phone connectivity, 8-speaker audio system, manual 50/50 folding third-row seat, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, 17-inch alloy wheels, and more. The SLT adds leather upholstery, rear parking sensors, remote engine start, power-adjustable pedals, and a rearview camera with its display built into the rearview mirror. Options on the SLT include an off-road package, heated driver and front passenger seats, ventilated front seats, and a navigation system. A power tailgate, power-folding mirrors, heated second-row seats, and a power release for folding the second row seats is optional. The range-topping Yukon Denali has 20-inch alloys wheels, unique cosmetics, upgraded audio, and a heated steering wheel. Rear-seat entertainment and a sunroof are optional across the 2011 GMC Yukon model range.

The 2011 GMC Yukon is offered with one of three engines-two gasoline and one hybrid gasoline-electric. The standard engine is a gasoline-fed 5.3-liter V-8 rated at 320 horsepower. Also available is a 6.2-liter V-8 engine rated at 403 horsepower. Both are mated to a standard 6-speed automatic transmission. The Yukon Hybrid combines a gasoline-fed, 332-horsepower, 6.0-liter V-8 engine and two 60-kW electric motors. The electric motors are tied to a 300-volt nickel-metal hydride battery that supplies the power. The unique gearbox is a 2-mode continuous electric ratio hybrid transmission with 4 fixed gears. GMC says that the hybrid powertrain allows the Yukon to run on either electric or gasoline power. When properly equipped, the Yukon is capable of towing 9,600 pounds, according to GMC. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 GMC Yukon between 15 mpg city and 23 mpg highway, depending on chassis, engine and transmission.

The 2011 GMC Yukon SLE starts at a base price of around $39,500, and the model range tops out with the Yukon Denali Hybrid, which starts at around $59,500.
