Exterior Features
The 2013 GMC Terrain is a compact crossover SUV offered in SLE, SLT and new luxury Denali trim levels. New metallic colors are available, including Atlantis Blue, Champagne Silver, Ashen Gray, and Iridium. Standard on all Terrains are projector-beam headlights, fog lights, and aluminum wheels.

Interior Features
The Terrain features a rear seat that slides forward to maximize cargo space. With the seat moved forward, the Terrain offers 31.6 cubic feet of storage space. With the rear seat folded, that volume expands to 63.9 cubic feet of cargo space. Standard for 2013 is a new Color Touch radio.

Optional Features
The Terrain's new Color Touch radio can be upgraded with IntelliLink, a smartphone pairing technology that features Bluetooth calling and music streaming, Pandora and Stitcher Internet radio compatibility, and iPod integration with a Gracenote music database.

Among the Terrain's additional options are leather, automatic climate control, power sunroof, power tailgate, rear-seat entertainment system, premium sound system, and a navigation system.

The Denali trim adds fancier chrome accents, subtle styling differences, and different aluminum wheel designs. Inside, the Terrain Denali features a soft-touch dashboard, smoked mahogany wood trim, and more.

Under the Hood
Standard on all Terrain models is a direct-injection, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine creating 182 horsepower and 172 lb.-ft. of torque. New for 2013, the optional direct-injection 3.6-liter V-6 engine generates 301 horsepower and 272 lb.-ft. of torque. With either engine, a 6-speed automatic transmission drives the front wheels (FWD), and an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system is available.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the Terrain models with the 4-cylinder engine are:
  • Terrain 4-cylinder FWD: 22/32/26 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • Terrain 4-cylinder AWD: 20/29/23 mpg

GMC provides the following estimates for the Terrain V-6:
  • Terrain V-6 FWD: 17/24/TBD mpg
  • Terrain V-6 AWD: 16/23/TBD mpg

Safety
Every 2013 Terrain is equipped with 6 air bags, 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, traction and stability control system with roll stability control, and a reversing camera. GMC also provides a free 6-month trial subscription to OnStar service, which includes Automatic Crash Notification.

A Safety package can be added to the SLT trim, and includes rear park-assist sensors, and forward-collision alert and lane-departure warning systems. These features are standard on the Denali trim, along with side blind-zone alert and rear cross-traffic alert technologies.

In crash tests, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the 2013 Terrain a 4- (out of 5) star overall rating. As this overview was written, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had not tested the 2013 Terrain. However, the structurally identical 2012 model was named a "Top Safety Pick" by the Institute.
