Introduction
The 2015 GMC Sierra HD is a heavy-duty pickup truck offered in 2500 and 3500 series, the latter outfitted to tow and haul maximum amounts of trailer weight and payload. Beneath its skin, the Sierra HD is identical to the Chevrolet Silverado HD; both of these General Motors trucks compete against the Ford F-Series Super Duty and Ram HD lineups.

Models and Features
Sierra HD buyers can choose between regular cab, double cab, and crew cab configurations paired with a standard or a long cargo box. Base, SLE, SLT, and luxurious Denali trim levels are available.

With this year's redesign, all Sierra pickups are equipped with controls that GMC claims can be used while the driver is wearing work gloves. Additional standard equipment highlights include air conditioning, power door locks, cruise control, tilt steering wheel, stereo with USB ports and an SD card slot, and access to subscription-based OnStar services.

Corner-step rear bumpers are new for 2015 and are included for all versions of the truck. A locking tailgate is also standard, as well as cargo box lighting, automatic-locking rear differential, engine and transmission oil coolers, and various heavy-duty mechanical components.

Upgrading to SLE trim adds a number of comfort and convenience features, including an 8-in. touch-screen infotainment system with Bluetooth and 4G LTE Wi-Fi connectivity. A reversing camera, integrated trailer brake controller, trailering equipment, and aluminum wheels are also included with SLE trim.

Leather seats are standard for the Sierra SLT, along with dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, remote engine starting, 110-volt AC power outlet, and larger chromed aluminum wheels.

Choose the Sierra Denali for a more upscale look inside and out, plus premium perforated leather with ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, premium audio system, navigation system, spray-in bedliner, front and rear park-assist sensors, and 20-in. wheels.

Under the Hood
A 6.0-liter V-8 engine is standard for the 2015 Sierra HD, one making 360 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque. It is E85-compatible, and a version of this engine that is specially designed to operate on compressed natural gas is available as an option. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard with this engine.

Another option is a 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V-8. Called "Duramax" by GMC, this engine is B20 biodiesel-compatible, and it makes 397 horsepower at 3,000 rpm and 765 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,600 rpm. This turbo-diesel is matched to an Allison 1000 6-speed automatic transmission designed specifically for heavy-duty towing and hauling.

When properly outfitted, a Sierra HD can tackle payloads up to 7,180 lbs. and tow as much as 23,200 lbs. when pulling a fifth-wheel trailer. Using a conventional hitch, the maximum tow rating is 19,600 lbs.

Fuel Economy
The federal government does not provide official EPA fuel-economy estimates for heavy-duty pickup trucks. GMC claims that when equipped with the optional Duramax turbo-diesel engine the Sierra HD can travel up to 680 highway miles on a single tank of fuel.

Safety and Technology
GMC offers several safety-related features for the 2015 Sierra HD. In addition to OnStar services, which include a subscription-based Automatic Crash Response system that can automatically summon help following a collision, the Sierra HD can be outfitted with a reversing camera as well as lane-departure warning and forward-collision warning systems that are paired with a Safety Alert Seat feature. Front and rear park-assist sensors are also optional for this truck.

GMC provides its Intellilink technology in most versions of the Sierra HD. Operated using an 8-in. color touch-screen display, this infotainment system supports smartphone pairing and music streaming, and is equipped with natural-voice recognition and 4G LTE Wi-Fi capabilities. A rear-seat entertainment system is also available, along with a premium sound system.
