The GMC Sierra 1500 is a traditional full-size pickup truck, a near-clone of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The current platform was introduced in 2007. Standard light-duty models wear 1500-series badging, while heavy-duty models are designated 2500HD and 3500HD. Like all full-size pickup trucks, the GMC Sierra 1500 is offered with a variety of build configurations. The only changes to the 2011 model are found within the vehicle's OnStar telematics system, which has been upgraded to the new 9.0 system for improved audio quality and speech recognition, according to GMC.
Like other full-size American pickup trucks, the 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 is available in three cab styles (standard, extended, and crew) and with two cargo box lengths (standard and long). The pickup is available in five trim levels: Work Truck, SL, SLE, SLT, and Denali. Base Work Trucks arrive with air conditioning, vinyl upholstery, steel wheels, and not much else. Consumers may also choose from a selection of upgraded trim levels which offer everything from leather upholstery to alloy wheels and high-grade audio systems. The range-topping Sierra 1500 Denali is fitted with the largest engine-and the most equipment-as standard.
The 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered with one of three gasoline engines. The standard engine is a 4.3-liter V-6 rated at 195 horsepower. Optional engines include a 4.8-liter V-8 rated at 302 horsepower and a 5.3-liter V-8 rated at 315 horsepower. The largest of the gasoline-powered engines is a 6.2-liter V-8 delivering 403 horsepower. Transmissions are 4- or 6-speed automatics, depending on the engine. The optional hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain uses a gasoline-fed 6.0-liter V-8 engine rated at 332 horsepower and two 60-kW electric motors. Combined system power is 379 horsepower. The motors are tied to a 300-volt nickel-metal hydride battery that supplies power. The gearbox is a 2-mode continuous electric ratio hybrid transmission with 4 fixed gears. The hybrid powertrain allows the Sierra to run on either electric or gasoline power. With the exception of the Denali trim, all 2011 GMC Sierra 1500s are available in rear- or 4-wheel drive (2WD or 4WD); Denali models come in either 2WD or all-wheel drive (AWD). According to the maker, the 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 is capable of towing up to 10,700 pounds when properly equipped (the hybrid is rated to tow 6,100 pounds). The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 between 14 mpg city and 23 mpg highway, depending on chassis, engine and transmission.
The 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 Work Truck starts at a base price of around $21,200, and the model range tops out with the Sierra Denali, which starts at just under $44,000.
