Light-duty G1500 and heavy-duty G3500 models are offered in base LS and up-level LT trims. The G1500 models have a 7200-pound Gross Vehicle Weight rating (GVW), while G3500 models have a 9600-pound GVW. G1500 models can haul up to 1355 pounds of payload and can tow up to 6600 pounds. G3500 models can handle up to 3585 pounds of payload and tow 10,000 pounds. Regular-length models have 126.3 cubic feet of cargo space, while extended-length models offer 146.3 cubic feet. Customers can choose right-side sliding or 60/40 swing out doors, as well as an optional left-side 60/40 swing-out door. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) are offered.

The 2008 GMC Savana is also available in several other commercial variations. Conversion Van models can be tailored to specific preferences. Two-seater commercial Cargo Vans provide 237 cubic feet of cargo space. Cutaway Vans can be used for RVs and various commercial applications.

Model Lineup
For 2008, GMC Savana G1500 models have standard 8-passenger seating with 3-passenger second and third rows. G3500 models add a 4-passenger fourth row for 12-passenger seating. Extended-wheelbase G3500 models are available with a 3-passenger fourth row and a 4-passenger fifth row to extend seating capacity to 15. A passenger-side 60/40 swing-out door is standard, and a sliding door is optional. A 60/40 swing-out door is also optional for the driver's side.

The LS trim level comes standard with air conditioning, AM/FM stereo with 2 speakers, driver information center, vinyl floor covering, vinyl upholstery, and P245/75R16 tires on steel wheels. LT trim adds cloth bucket seats, cruise control, power door locks, power windows, remote keyless entry, carpeting, tilt steering wheel, rubber floor mats, digital compass, and rear heat and air conditioning. Powertrain
The standard engine in the 2008 GMC Savana is GM's 5.3-liter Vortec V-8, which makes 301 hp at 5200 rpm and 335 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. The 5.3-liter V-8 engine can be ordered as a FlexFuel unit that can run on regular gasoline or E85, a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. Those seeking more power can opt for the Vortec 6.0-liter V-8 engine, which delivers 323 hp at 4600 rpm and 373 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm. Both engines are mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission that has GM's tow/haul mode for heavy-duty towing and hauling applications. With the 5.3-liter V-8 engine and RWD, the Savana G1500 gets 15 mpg city/20 mpg highway, according to EPA estimates. With the 5.3-liter V-8 engine and AWD, it gets 14 mpg city/18 mpg highway. Fuel economy numbers are not available for the 6.0-liter V-8 engine.

Safety
Standard safety equipment on the 2008 GMC Savana includes dual front air bags (with passenger-side deactivation switch for G3500); head-protecting curtain side air bags that cover all seating rows; tire-pressure monitor; 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Hydroboost; traction control; and electronic stability control.

The Savana G1500 has received a 5-star rating for the driver and front passenger in frontal-impact tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Both RWD and AWD models have also received a 3-star rollover-resistance rating from the NHTSA.

Technology
The 2008 GMC Savana features Hydroboost, which is a high-volume brake master cylinder designed to provide quicker stops, according to the manufacturer. For 2008, the driver information center has been upgraded to provide instructions to replace the fuel filter, clean the exhaust filter, and service the air conditioning system; warnings that the transmission is hot, traction control has been disengaged, the fuel level is low, and a vehicle theft has been attempted; and reminders that a turn signal has been left on, the gas cap hasn't been properly tightened, and the vehicle's top speed is limited. The driver information center can be viewed in English, French, Spanish and Arabic.
