Not much changes on the Savana for 2007, but what does is significant. The V-6 engine that was standard on Passenger Van 1500 models last year has been replaced with a more powerful V-8, specifically a 295-hp 5.3-liter engine that delivers 335 lb.-ft. of torque. What's more is that customers can order an environmentally-friendly FlexFuel version of the engine capable of running on an ethanol/gasoline mix.
The GMC Savana is a versatile full-size van available in several configurations. As a Passenger Van it can haul up to 15 occupants, Conversion Van models can be tailored to specific preferences, two-seater commercial Cargo Vans provide 237 cubic feet of cargo space, and Cutaway Vans can be used for RVs and various commercial applications. The Savana is available with two wheelbase lengths: regular (135-inch) and extended (155-inch). Passenger Vans are available in light-duty 1500 and heavy-duty 3500 models (the 2500 has been discontinued) in base LS and up-level LT trims. Customers can choose from a wide variety of door configurations and can also opt for all-wheel drive.
The 295-hp, Vortec 5.3-liter V-8 is the standard engine in 1500 Passenger Van models. In addition to the 5.3-liter, GMC offers four other engines for the Savana. A 195-hp, Vortec 4.3-liter V-6 is the base engine for 1500 Cargo Vans and some Conversion Van models. The 285-hp, Vortec 4.8-liter V-8 is used for heavy-duty applications in 2500 Series Cargo Vans. Those seeking more power can opt for the Vortec 6.0-liter V-8, which delivers 300 hp. Finally, available on 2500 and 3500 Savana Cargo Van models is a powerful Duramax 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V-8 engine that delivers 250 hp. All of the engines come with GM's unique tow/haul mode for heavy-duty towing and hauling applications.
The Savana offers several safety features, including StabiliTrak electronic stability control, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Hydroboost (a high-volume brake master cylinder for quicker stops), GM's OnStar safety and security system, and front and side-impact air bags.
The GMC Savana competes in the Large Van segment, which consists of four models. Buyers in this segment look for comfort, performance, and quality, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider StudySM and the Escaped Shopper Study.SM
The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM were the Ford E-Series (180,457 units sold), Chevrolet Express (123,195), and GMC Savana (29,973). The GMC Savana's 29,973 sales in 2006 represent a decrease of 13.8 percent compared to the previous year. Other models offered in the Large Van segment include the Dodge Sprinter.
