Introduction
The 2015 GMC Savana is a full-size, body-on-frame van available only in rear-wheel drive (RWD), and in configurations that will seat 8, 12 (standard), or 15. The 1500 series has been eliminated for 2015, leaving the 2500 and 3500 series models. Three V-8 engines are available. Competitors include the Chevrolet Express, Ford Transit, Nissan NV, and Ram ProMaster.

Models and Features
GMC offers the 2015 Savana van in two trim levels: LS and LT. Both the 2500 and the 3500 have a standard 135-in. wheelbase; the 3500 is available with a 155-in. wheelbase. The LS trim level is the basic work van, and it features power windows and door locks, vinyl upholstery and rubber floor covering, front air conditioning, 16-in. steel wheels, rear privacy glass, and a 2-speaker radio.

The Savana LT features vehicle-wide air conditioning and heating, cloth upholstery, some chrome exterior trim, keyless entry, full-length carpeted floors, cruise control, tilt-only steering wheel, and vanity mirrors in the sun visors. Many of these features can be had as individual options on the LS.

Many options are available on the 2015 Savana, some at low or no cost. Mechanical options include the more powerful engines, dedicated compressed natural gas system, high idle switch, cold climate package, engine block heater, heavy-duty battery, heavy-duty locking rear differential, heavy-duty trailering equipment, 7-in. sealed connector trailer wiring, and a 3-tank fuel system. Exterior options include rear body-colored halo trim, outside heated power-adjustable black mirrors, sliding passenger-side door, various license plate holders, front and rear splash guards, trailer hitch package, and antenna equipment. Interior options include various upgraded audio systems, including one with navigation; a USB port; Bluetooth connectivity; power adjusters to driver and front passenger seats; leather-wrapped steering wheel; steering wheel-mounted audio controls; outside temperature display; remote starter; rear window defogger; smoker's package; rear park assist; rear-vision camera; and dual-note horn. A roadside-assistance package and a wireless network interface are also offered.

Maximum towing capacity for the Savana 3500 model, when properly equipped, is 10,000 lbs.

Under the Hood
Standard engine on both the 2500 and the 3500 series of the 2015 GMC Savana is a 4.8-liter V-8 that generates 285 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. Two larger V-8 engines are optional: one a 6.0-liter version that generates 329 horsepower and 373 lb.-ft. of torque; the other is a compressed-natural-gas version of that same engine, which makes 282 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. of torque. Available only on the Savana 3500 is a 6.6-liter, turbocharged, diesel V-8 engine that makes 260 horsepower and 525 lb.-ft. of torque. In all cases, a 6-speed automatic transmission and RWD are standard.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the 2015 GMC Savana 2500 or 3500 with the base engine achieves 11 mpg city, 17 mpg highway, and 13 mpg combined. With the 6.0-liter V-8 conventional engine, the 2500 gets 11 mpg city/16 mpg highway/13 mpg combined; the 3500 gets 11 mpg city/16 mpg highway/12 mpg combined. With E85 flex fuel in that engine, the figures are 8 mpg/11 mpg/9 mpg (city/highway/combined). The EPA does not provide figures for the diesel engine.

Safety Ratings and Technology
Every 2015 Savana is equipped with two air bags, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, and OnStar telematics with emergency response services. Side curtain air bags are optional on the cargo van but standard on the passenger model, while a rearview camera and rear park-assist sensors are available on both.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2015 GMC Savana 3 stars (out of a possible 5) for overall crashworthiness, but has not published the results of other tests. As of this writing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated the crashworthiness of the 2015 GMC Savana.
