What's New for 2014:

  • Standard power windows and door locks on passenger van model
  • Revised selection of paint colors

The 2014 GMC Savana is a full-size, body-on-frame van available in cutaway, cargo, and passenger versions. Buyers have the choice of different wheelbases, rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), as well as 1500, 2500, and 3500 series models. Competitors include the Chevrolet Express, Ford Transit, Nissan NV, and Ram ProMaster.

Models and Features
GMC offers the 2014 Savana cargo van in two trim levels: WT (work truck) and Diesel. Aside from differences under the hood, both versions share a list of standard features that includes power windows and door locks, vinyl upholstery and floor covering, air conditioning, 16-in. steel wheels, and pre-wiring for a radio.

The Savana passenger van's base version is the LS, highlighted by its seating for up to 12 occupants, 16- or 17-in. steel wheels, OnStar, and a no-frills 2-speaker audio system. An available LT trim level adds a few extra creature comforts, such as carpeting and cloth upholstery, rear air conditioning, cruise control, and a tilt steering wheel.

Options and Packages
With its limited selection of standard features covering just the basics, the 2014 GMC Savana cargo van's list of options is left to fill in the gaps with upgrades including audio and navigation systems, interior bins, Bluetooth connectivity, rearview camera, second-row 3-passenger bench seat, chrome exterior trim, and more.

Many of those items carry over to the Savana passenger van, though they're part of a broader assortment of amenities. Among them are power front seats, accommodations for up to 15 occupants, and alloy wheels.

Under the Hood
Those considering the purchase of a 2014 GMC Savana cargo van have their pick of five engines, the smallest of which is a 4.3-liter V-6 that produces 195 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, all of which is directed to the rear wheels via a 4-speed automatic transmission. Next in line is a 4.8-liter V-8 that generates 280 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, followed by a 5.3-liter V-8 that creates 310 horsepower and 334 lb.-ft. of torque. An AWD system is available with the latter.

If those options aren't up to the task, GMC offers a compressed natural gas (CNG)-compatible 6.0-liter V-8 that delivers 324 horsepower and 373 lb.-ft. of torque (279 and 320, respectively, when running on CNG), and a turbocharged, 6.6-liter V-8 diesel engine boasting 260 horsepower and 525 lb.-ft. of torque. These power plants are mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

For the Savana passenger van, GMC skips over the V-6 and instead offers only the four V-8s. In this case, the 4.8-liter V-8 produces 285 horsepower, while the 6.0-liter runs strictly on gasoline and generates 342 horsepower.

According to GMC, the 2014 Savana can tow up to 10,000 lbs. and accommodate up to 4,145 lbs. of payload.

Fuel Economy
A quick check of the 2014 GMC Savana's EPA ratings show that efficiency is not this van's strong point (figures are not available for the 6.6-liter diesel). The V-6 proves to be the most frugal with its gas consumption, averaging 14 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. RWD 1500 models fitted with the 5.3-liter V-8 knock off another mpg, while the RWD 2500 cargo van fares the worst with estimates of 10 mpg around town, 15 mpg on the freeway, and 12 mpg combined.

Safety Ratings and Technology
As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has rated the crashworthiness of the 2014 GMC Savana.

Every new Savana is equipped with 2 air bags, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, and OnStar telematics with emergency response services. Side-curtain air bags are optional on the cargo van but standard on the passenger model, while a rearview camera and rear park-assist sensors are available on both.
