What's New for 2012:
- Wheatland Yellow exterior color now available
The 2012 GMC Savana is available as a passenger van (Savana) or a cargo van (Savana Cargo). As a passenger van, the Savana seats up to 15 passengers. As a cargo van, the Savana has a payload capacity of 4,490 pounds, and towing capacity of 9,700 pounds. There are two main exterior differences between the Savana and the Savana Cargo: the passenger van has windows along its sides, while the Savana Cargo features plain panels; and the passenger van is offered in a 115-inch or 135-inch wheelbase, while the Cargo is available with a wheelbase of 135 inches or 155 inches. The Savana and the Savana Cargo are offered in the light-duty 1500 Series and the heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 Series, and the passenger van comes in LS and LT trims.
Standard on the Savana Cargo are 16-inch steel wheels, air conditioning, vinyl upholstery, and front bucket seats. The Savana LS is similarly equipped, while the LT includes cloth upholstery, rear-seat climate control, full-length carpeting, power accessories, auxiliary lighting, and other features. The Savana 1500 seats 8 passengers; the 2500 and the 3500 seat 12, or 15 in the extended-wheelbase 3500.
The GMC Savana Cargo may add power windows and locks, towing equipment, cloth upholstery, sliding side door, swing-out doors on the left side of the cargo box, remote ignition and entry, driver-only front seat, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 2-speaker sound system. Many of the Savana LT's features are optional on the LS, and a Cold Climate package of options is available.
Under the Hood
The GMC Savana provides four different V-8 engines: a 5.3-liter rated at 310 horsepower on the 1500 Series; 4.8-liter rated at 280 horsepower on the 2500; 6.0-liter rated at 324 horsepower on the 3500 (also available on the 2500); and an optional 6.6-liter turbo-diesel engine that delivers 525 lb.-ft. of torque on the 3500. The Savana Cargo's base engine is a 4.3-liter V-6 that delivers 195 horsepower.
Depending on model and trim, EPA fuel-economy figures for the 2012 GMC Savana range from 10 mpg in the city to 20 mpg on the highway.
Standard safety features on the GMC Savana include anti-lock disc brakes; side curtain air bags are available on the Savana Cargo. The Savana passenger van adds head curtain air bags and OnStar communications as standard.
To date, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have conducted tests on the 2012 GMC Savana.
