The GMC Savana is a traditional full-size van that was first introduced in 1996. It is GM's largest van, and a clone of the Chevrolet Express. The Savana is capable of carrying up to 15 passengers. Last completely redesigned for the 2003 model year, the Savana is now in its second generation, The 2011 GMC Savana is available in different chassis weights and with different wheelbases, just like its primary competition, the Ford E-Series. Thanks to its many configurations, including available 4-wheel drive (4WD), the Savana is popular in commercial applications, where it is frequently used as a hotel shuttle or ambulance. GMC has upgraded the Savana for 2011 with several enhancements, including a new turbo-diesel engine, new 4.8-liter V-8 engine for the 2500 Series, heavy-duty rear differential, upgraded OnStar telecommunications, and available WiFi Internet access.
The 2011 GMC Savana is sold in three models: light-duty 1500 Series, and heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 Series. The Savana is sold in LS and LT trims, and in two wheelbase lengths: regular and long. GMC also offers a heavy-duty wheelbase for commercial use. In standard configuration, the 2011 GMC Savana is fitted with air conditioning, swing-out side doors, vinyl upholstery, rubber floor covering, basic AM/FM audio package, and seating for 12. The 2500 and 3500 Series, with the heavy-duty chassis, will seat up to 15 passengers. The upgraded LT trim adds full power accessories, remote keyless entry, rear air conditioning, full-length carpeting, cloth upholstery, cruise control, and more. Options include alloy wheels, trailer package, sliding side doors, remote vehicle starting, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and other passenger amenities.
The 2011 GMC Savana is offered with five different engines. Standard rear-wheel-drive models are fitted with a 4.3-liter V-6 engine rated at 195 horsepower and mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. Larger engines include the aforementioned 4.8-liter V-8 rated at 280 horsepower, a 5.3-liter V-8 rated at 310 horsepower, and a 6.0-liter V-8 rated at 323 horsepower. The larger engines are mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. A turbocharged diesel powerplant, displacing 6.6 liters and rated at 260 horsepower, is optional. All-wheel drive is optional on some configurations. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 GMC Savana between 11 mpg city and 20 mpg highway, depending on chassis, engine and transmission.
The 2011 GMC Savana LS 1500 starts at a base price of around $29,000, and the model range tops out with the Savana LS 3500, which starts at around $45,000.
