The 2009 GMC Savana is also available in conversion van models which can be tailored to specific preferences. Two-seater commercial Cargo Vans provide up to 237.3 cubic feet of cargo space. Cutaway Vans can be used for RVs, school buses and various commercial applications.

Powertrain
The base engine for light-duty (1500) Savana Cargo models is a 4.3-liter V-6 that delivers 160 hp at 4600 rpm and 260 lb.-ft. of torque at 2800 rpm. On the 2500 series cargo vans the standard engine is a 4.8-liter V-8 producing 279 hp at 5600 rpm and 294 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. Passenger G1500/H1500 models and cargo and H1500 cargo and conversion models get their power from a 5.3-liter V-8 engine, which generates 301 hp at 5200 rpm and 325 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. A flex-fuel version of this engine is available, delivering the same horsepower and torque as the gasoline counterpart, while consuming E85 ethanol fuel or any mixture of E85 and gasoline. Engines are mated with Hydra-Matic 4L60 or 4L80 4-speed electronic or heavy-duty electronic automatic transmissions with overdrive and a torque converter. Optional on some G2500 cargo and conversion van models and standard on G2500 regular wheelbase and G3500 regular or extended wheelbase passenger and G2500 regular/extended wheelbase cargo/conversion vans is a Gen-IV, 6.0-liter V-8 engine, which delivers 323 hp at 4400 rpm and 373 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. New for 2009 is a fast-idle option that improves running numerous accessories while idling. The Gen-IV engines include special friction-reducing polymer coating on piston skirts, full-floating piston pins, damping patch on the oil pan (externally mounted), timing chain tensioner and quieter alternator. GM says the Gen-IV engines are 90-percent cleaner than a decade ago. Cast-iron exhaust manifolds matched with dual close-coupeed catalytic converters help reduce cold-start emissions, the company says. For maximum performance, a Duramax 6.6-liter, turbo-diesel V-8 engine delivers 250 hp at 3200 rpm and "class-leading" (per GMC) 460-lb.-ft. of torque at 1600 rpm. The engine is paired with a Hydra-Matic 4L85 electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission.

EPA fuel-economy estimates are only available for the 5.3-liter V-8 engine. With the 5.3-liter engine and RWD, the Savana 1500 cargo van gets 14 mpg city/18 mpg highway on gasoline and 10 mpg city/13 mpg highway on E85. With AWD, the numbers are 14 mpg city/17 mpg highway (gas) and 10 mpg city/12 mpg highway (E85). The conversion cargo and passenger vans (RWD and AWD) get an estimated 13 mpg city/16 mpg highway (gas) and 9 mpg city/12 mpg highway (E85).

Safety
The 2009 GMC Savana includes a host of standard safety equipment: electronic stability control; lap and shoulder belts for the center seats (standard on all passenger models); 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Hydroboost; dynamic rear proportioning; driver and front passenger air bags; and daytime running lamps. A tire-pressure monitor and flat and convex exterior mirrors for a wider field of vision are standard on all Savana cargo and passenger models for 2009. Head curtain side air bags are standard on all passenger vans and optional on cargo vans. Enhanced Technology Glass (ETG) is standard on 12- and 15-passenger Savana models.

The Savana 1500 passenger van and 15-passenger van received 3 stars in the agency's rollover testing.

The heater operates automatically to turn on and off within parameters including outside air temperature, coolant temperature, fuel level, and whether the engine is running. It features a self-contained, pressurized auxiliary coolant heater (with surge tank) that uses diesel fuel to generate up to 17,200 Btu/h of heating energy.
