Overview

What's New
Fresh looks, better handling, fuel economy enhancements, and improved braking performance are some of the highlights you'll find on the 2006 GMC Envoy. StabiliTrak, GM's automated electronic stability control system, is now standard. Upgraded Denali models now come standard with the 5.3L V-8 featuring GM's Active Fuel Management engine technology for better fuel economy. Meanwhile, the Envoy XUV-noted for its collapsible mid-gate, among other things-has been discontinued for 2006.

Overview
With unstable fuel prices, the Envoy's 300-hp, Vortec 5300 5.3L V-8 with Active Fuel Management (formerly known as "Displacement on Demand," or DoD) can help ease the pain. Active Fuel Management, which is standard on Envoy Denali models, can improve fuel efficiency by five to eight percent. Under light load conditions, it shuts down four of the eight cylinders. When the power is needed, however, all eight cylinders kick in and the entire operation is seamless. The Envoy and Envoy XL (the latter sporting a longer wheelbase to accommodate a third row of seats) both come standard with an updated 291-hp, Vortec 4200 4.2L DOHC inline six-cylinder engine. All Envoy models are available in two-wheel drive and Autotrac four-wheel drive.

For 2006, the five-passenger Envoy and stretched seven-passenger Envoy XL are available in three trim levels: SLE, SLT, and Denali. Base SLE models feature cloth interiors, dual-zone manual air conditioning, a CD player, keyless entry, 17-inch wheels, and power windows/mirrors/locks. SLT models cover the seats and steering wheel in leather and also include (dual-zone) automatic climate control, a driver information center, and redundant radio and climate controls on the steering wheel. Denali versions are dressed with 18-inch alloy wheels for 2006 and also feature special interior and exterior accents, power-adjustable pedals, heated seats, and a Bose audio system.

The Competition
Midsize Utility vehicles like the GMC Envoy lost ground as a segment in 2005, though not as much as the Large Utility segment. Nonetheless, the segment will likely continue to be popular among those who need the towing and hauling power, as well as the cargo room they provide.

The sales leader in the segment is the Jeep Grand Cherokee (213,584 units delivered in calendar year 2005), followed closely by the Ford Explorer (203,483), according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report.SM The Chevrolet TrailBlazer (regular-length model only), with 163,581 units sold in 2005, ranked third on the sales list. The regular-length Envoy tallied 67,106 sales in calendar year 2005, and the extended Envoy XL found 33,983 buyers, for a combined sales total of 101,089. Other top-selling vehicles in the segment include the Honda Pilot (143,353), Dodge Durango (115,439), and Toyota 4Runner (103,830).
