Exterior Features
The 2012 GMC Canyon is a midsize 5-passenger pickup truck with a maximum payload of 1,422 pounds and a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds. The Canyon is offered in three trim levels and in three body styles: Regular cab, Extended cab, and Crew cab. The cargo box is 5 feet long. A bedliner is standard, as is a skid plate on 4-wheel-drive (4WD) models.

Interior Features
Standard features on the 2012 GMC Canyon include a 60/40 split-folding front bench seat, air conditioning, cruise control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Optional Features
The 2012 GMC Canyon offers option packages that include, among other features, fog lights, tinted rear glass, auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated leather front bucket seats, and an 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat.

Under the Hood
The GMC Canyon offers three engines: a 2.9-liter 4-cylinder rated at 185 horsepower; 3.7-liter 5-cylinder rated at 242 horsepower; and a 5.3-liter V-8 rated at 300 horsepower. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on the base model, and a 4-speed automatic is standard on higher trim levels.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy figures for the 2012 GMC Canyon are:
- Canyon Regular and Crew cab with 2.9-liter engine: 18/25/21 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- Canyon Crew cab with 5.3-liter engine: 14/19/16 mpg

Safety
Standard safety features on the 2012 GMC Canyon include the OnStar telematics system, stability and traction control, and head curtain air bags.

In government crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Canyon received 4 (out of 5) stars for rollover protection. The NHTSA did not test the Canyon for frontal-offset and side-impact crash protection or give an overall rating. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the GMC Canyon received an "Acceptable" rating for frontal-offset crash protection; "Poor" rating for side-impact protection; and "Marginal" ratings for roof strength and rear-crash protection.
