Overview

The Canyon (virtually identical to the Chevy Colorado), available in three short-box body styles-regular, extended and crew cab-comes with standard 2-wheel drive (2WD) or 4-wheel drive (4WD). It can tow up to 6000 pounds with the extended/crew cab, and 4000 pounds in regular cab form. Changes for 2010 include standard head curtain side air bags on all models, three new exterior colors and an expansion of the ZQ8 Sport Suspension package to a greater variety of models and equipment groups.

  • ZQ8 Sport Suspension package now available on 2WD extended cab and crew cab SLE-1 and SLT equipment groups
  • Head curtain side air bags now standard on all models
  • Three new exterior colors: Merlot Jewel Metallic, Gray Green Metallic and Pure Silver Metallic

A light-duty compact pickup truck, the 2010 GMC Canyon is similar to the Chevrolet Colorado, with slight differences in interior and exterior styling. It's available in two- or four-wheel drive and with a choice of three cab styles and trim levels. The Canyon is also available with a chassis-cab configuration and customized storage options for commercial use.

The regular and extended cab models have a six-foot cargo bed; the extended cab adds reverse-opening doors. The crew cab model has forward-swinging doors and a five-foot cargo area. The crew cab has bench seating in the front, and can accommodate six passengers.

The three trim levels are the Work Truck, SLE, and SLT. The basic Work Truck trim has air conditioning, satellite radio, and 16-inch wheels. The SLE adds a few cosmetic features, but most power accessories are only available as options on the regular cab, becoming standard on the extended cab. The SLT with extended cab features chrome wheels, leather interior trim, and heated front seats. The crew cab version of the SLT trim adds a heavy-duty suspension. Optional on the higher trim levels are two suspension packages: Off-Road, which includes larger wheels, skid plates, and locking rear differential on four-wheel drive models; and Sport, which includes performance tires and a lowered suspension. Other features are available as stand-alone options.

The standard 185-hp, 2.9-liter four-cylinder engine uses regular fuel and produces 190 lb.-ft. of torque. The optional 242-hp, 3.7-liter inline-five cylinder engine (also using regular fuel) generates up to 242 lb.-ft. The top-line engine is a 300-hp, 5.3-liter V8, which is available only on extended cab and crew cab models. A five-speed manual transmission is standard with the four-cylinder engine, and a four-speed automatic transmission is optional. The two larger engines have the automatic transmission as standard.

According to EPA estimates, the base model delivers 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg highway, while the top-line four-wheel drive model with crew cab and the V8 engine delivers 14 mpg city and 19 mpg highway. With a V8, the Canyon can tow up to three tons.

The 2010 GMC Canyon starts at about $16,985.
