The Canyon (virtually identical to the Chevy Colorado), available in three short-box body styles-regular, extended and crew cab-comes with standard 2-wheel drive (2WD) or 4-wheel drive (4WD). It can tow up to 6000 pounds with the extended/crew cab, and 4000 pounds in regular cab form.

Model Lineup
The 2009 GMC Canyon lineup includes regular cab, extended cab or crew cab models, with two pickup bed lengths, three available suspensions and three engines. Two-wheel drive (2WD) and 4-wheel drive (4WD) are available. The Canyon is offered in Work Truck, SLE and SLT trims. Standard features include XM satellite radio, electronic stability control, rack-and-pinion steering, air conditioning, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, and folding outside mirrors. Work Truck models include a 5-speed manual transmission; chrome bumpers; interior carpet (with vinyl floor covering available); new 16-inch steel wheels (replacing last year's 15-inch wheels); underbody spare tire; premium cloth upholstery (vinyl available); 3-person seating capacity; 60/40-split bench front seats; and an AM/FM stereo. SLE trim includes Solar Ray tinted glass, 16-inch aluminum wheels and other features. SLE2 and SLT trim add even more popular equipment and include deep-tinted side windows and a rear sliding window.

Options for the 2009 GMC Canyon include the Z71 Off Road package; new ZQ8 sport suspension; glass package with deep-tinted side windows and rear sliding window; head curtain side air bags; locking rear differential; three rear-end gear ratios for models with a V-8 engine; remote keyless entry; fog lamps; leather-wrapped steering wheel; upgraded stereo systems; power, heated leather seating; high-back bucket seats; running boards; and self-dimming inside rearview mirror.

Powertrain
Three engines power the 2009 GMC Canyon. The base engine (in all models except Z71-equipped crew cabs) is a 2.9-liter, dual-overhead-cam (DOHC), 16-valve inline 4-cylinder that generates 185 hp at 5600 rpm and 190 lb.-ft. of torque at 2800 rpm. Power is transferred through a 5-speed manual transmission or electronically controlled 4-speed automatic. Standard on 4WD crew cab and optional on all models is a 3.7-liter, DOHC, 5-cylinder VVT engine rated at 242 hp at 5600 rpm and 242 lb.-ft. of torque at 4600 rpm, mated to an electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission. New for 2009 is an optional (on extended and crew cab, standard with ZQ8 suspension) 5.3-liter, cast-aluminum V-8 engine that delivers 300 hp at 5200 rpm and 320 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm.

EPA fuel-economy estimates for 2WD regular and crew cab models with the 2.9-liter engine and manual or automatic transmission are 18 mpg city/24 mpg highway. With 4WD and the 2.9-liter engine and manual or automatic transmission, the regular cab model gets 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway. The 3.7-liter engine in regular and crew cab 2WD models with automatic transmission gets an estimated 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway, while the 2WD extended cab achieves 15 mpg city/20 mpg highway. In 4WD models, the numbers are 16 mpg city/22 mpg highway for regular cab and 16 mpg city/21 mpg highway for extended and crew cab models. Estimates for the 5.3-liter V-8 engine are 15 mpg city/21 mpg highway (2WD/automatic), and 14 mpg city/19 mpg highway (4WD/automatic).

Three suspension systems available on the 2009 GMC Canyon include standard Z85 on 2WD or 4WD models; Z71 off-road suspension with higher stance, and larger wheel/tire combination; and the new ZQ8 sport suspension offered exclusively with the new 5.3-liter V-8 engine. The ZQ8 package includes specific steering; track-tuned suspension; high-performance cooler; unique under-hood sealing system; "slammed" ride height; 18-inch aluminum wheels; and low-profile sport tires. All Canyon models get a new brake system featuring increased rotor and caliper piston diameters, and 4-channel anti-lock brakes (ABS) with yaw control. A locking rear differential is optional.
