Overview
Making its debut just last year, the 2008 GMC Acadia midsize crossover utility vehicle (CUV) is mostly carryover, with some minor enhancements, including an updated AWD system. Built on GM's body-frame-integral design, Acadia shares the same platform as the Saturn Outlook and Buick Enclave. Representing the fastest-growing segment in the U.S. automotive market, CUVs provide consumers with car-like responsiveness and fuel-economy advantages. GMC claims the Acadia offers a stable ride, roomy cabin and plenty of cargo storage, and positions the model as an alternative to minivans and SUVs.

Model Lineup
Consumers can choose a 2008 GMC Acadia in either front-wheel drive (FWD) or AWD, in either SLE or SLT trim. The SLE trim includes deluxe 5-passenger cloth seating with second-row 60/40 split-bench seats; double-dual exhaust with chrome tips; power windows; rear manual liftgate; remote keyless entry; tire-pressure-monitoring system; stability control system with traction control; 18-inch aluminum wheels; AM/FM stereo with MP3-compatible CD player; and XM satellite radio free for three months. The SLT1 trim has 7-passenger seating with heated, leather-appointed, power driver and front passenger seats; tri-zone automatic climate control; hydraulic power steering with variable assist; rearview mirror with auto-dimming and compass; body-color, foldaway, power-adjustable, heated side-view mirrors with integrated turn signals; bright belt-line molding; driver information center; upgraded stereo; and 18-inch machined aluminum wheels. The SLT2 adds a cargo package with shade and net; convenience package (with remote start and ultrasonic rear parking assist); power rear liftgate; heated windshield washer nozzles; and a 3-prong, household-style, 115-volt power outlet.

Options on the 2008 GMC Acadia include a dual sunroof; ultrasonic rear parking assist; front leather-appointed reclining bucket seats; cargo area audio controls; high-intensity discharge headlamps; and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Powertrain
A 3-6-liter V-6 engine powers the 2008 GMC Acadia, producing 275 hp at 6600 rpm and 251 lb.-ft. of torque at 3200 rpm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. While FWD is standard, the available AWD system, now called "active on demand," is updated for 2008. EPA fuel economy estimates for the FWD Acadia are 16 mpg city/24 mpg highway, while the AWD model gets an estimated 16 mpg city/22 mpg highway.

Safety
The 2008 GMC Acadia has dual front and side-impact air bags, along with head curtain side air bags for all rows in outboard seating positions. Electronic stability control, traction control and 4-wheel anti-lock brakes are standard, as well as daytime running lamps, theft-deterrent system and OnStar with one-year Safe & Sound plan.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2008 GMC Acadia receives perfect 5-star ratings for all occupants in frontal- and side-impact crash tests, and a 4-star rating in rollover testing in both 2WD and 4WD.

Technology
The 2008 GMC Acadia offers the standard AM/FM stereo with MP3-compatible CD player (SLE), or AM/FM stereo with MP3-compatible in-dash 6-disc CD player (SLT). Standard XM satellite radio comes with a free 3-month subscription. A Bose premium 10-speaker surround sound system with subwoofer and audio system controls in the rear cargo area, a DVD entertainment system, and touch-screen navigation system are also available.
