The Ford Taurus is a full-size family sedan based on a Volvo-derived platform. It returns for 2009 with more safety features and a new well-equipped base model that brings to five the number of available Ford Taurus models. Ford boasts that the 2009 Taurus has been rated as a segment safety leader and the safest large car in North America by federal safety regulators. Last year's model, with its stability control (also standard on the 2009 Taurus) was a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Seven new paint colors are available for 2009, including Cinnamon Metallic and Sangria Red Metallic.

Model Lineup
Ford offers five trim levels for the 2009 Taurus: SE, SEL, SEL AWD, Limited and Limited AWD. The new base SE model is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Standard equipment on the base model includes an AM/FM CD audio system with an MP3 input jack, climate control with rear-seat ducts, power driver's seat, fold-flat front passenger seat, extra sound insulation, halogen headlamps, and 17-inch wheels. The Ford Taurus SEL and Taurus Limited with front- or all-wheel drive include more standard amenities such as a trip computer; leather and woodgrain trim and touches; power driver's seat; 17-inch aluminum wheels; premium audio system; automatic climate control; power sunroof; and Sirius satellite radio. The Taurus Limited adds leather upholstery to the seats, automatic climate control, and a premium audio system with subwoofer. It also includes 18-inch chrome-clad wheels, and memory features for the front seats and side mirrors. Ford's Sync voice-activated hands-free communication and entertainment system and universal garage door opener are also included on the Limited. Other Limited features include chrome-accent door handles, adjustable accelerator and brake pedals with memory, heated driver and passenger seats and a reverse sensor.

The 2009 Ford Taurus is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 engine producing 263 hp and 249 lb.-ft. of torque. It is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The large family sedan earns a PZEV (partial zero-emission vehicle) rating from the EPA. Fuel economy is estimated at 18 mpg city/28 mpg highway with front-wheel drive, and 17 mpg city/27 mpg highway with all-wheel drive.

Dual front air bags, seat-mounted front side air bags, and side curtain air bags for both rows are standard on every 2009 Ford Taurus. Other standard safety features include traction control, ABS, stability control, power-adjustable pedals, and an SOS-Post Crash Alert System that unlocks doors and activates the horn and emergency flashers if the air bags are deployed in an accident. A reverse collision sensing system is optional.

In National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) testing, the 2009 Ford Taurus earned 5-star ratings (the Administration's highest rating) for all occupants in frontal and side-impact crash tests and 4 stars for rollover resistance. As mentioned earlier, the IIHS hasn't rated the 2009 model yet, but the 2008 model with stability control was named a "Top Safety Pick" by the Institute.

Ford's Sync voice-activated hands-free communication and entertainment system, developed jointly with Microsoft, is standard on the 2009 Taurus Limited and optional on SEL models. Sync integrates cell phones and media players, such as the MP3 player, with the vehicle using Bluetooth technology and USB connectivity. Sync-equipped Taurus models feature an electro-chromic rearview mirror with compass and microphone features. A new universal garage door opener on the Limited is capable of learning as many as three garage door and power gate remote control codes, which eliminates the need for separate remote controls.
