The Ford Ranger is a compact pickup truck that has been on sale since 1983. Offered with 4- or 6-cylinder engines, sourced from Ford and from Mazda, the Ranger grew in size for the 1986 model year with the introduction of the Supercab (its 17-inch stretch allowed two more passengers to squeeze into the cab). The second-generation model debuted for the 1993 model year. The redesigned model shared platforms with the Ford Explorer, Mazda Navajo, and Mercury Mountaineer. The Ranger received a facelift in 1998 that included a longer wheelbase and a stretched cab. Over the past decade, the Ranger has been the recipient of few changes, as the automaker focuses on its other products. With an all-new third-generation model rumored to be right around the corner, the 2011 Ford Ranger is unchanged.
The 2011 Ford Ranger is offered in Regular and SuperCab (extended) body styles, with a 6- or 7-foot bed, depending on combination. There are three different trim levels: XL, XLT and Sport. In standard configuration, the Ranger XL arrives with vinyl upholstery (the SuperCab model is upgraded with cloth upholstery), air conditioning, 60/40 split bench seat, trailer hitch, and 15-inch steel wheels. The Ranger XLT builds upon those features by adding cloth upholstery, full power accessories, fog lamps, keyless entry, leather-wrapped steering wheel, satellite radio, and more. The Ranger Sport is configured with upgraded suspension, alloy wheels, bucket seats, and other amenities.
The 2011 Ford Ranger is offered with two different engines. The standard powerplant is a 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 143 horsepower. A 4.0-liter V-6 engine rated at 207 horsepower is optional. Both engines come mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional 5-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive (2WD) is standard, with 4-wheel drive (4WD) optional. When properly equipped, Ford says the Ranger is able to tow 5800 pounds. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 Ford Ranger between 15 mpg city and 27 mpg highway, depending on powertrain.
The 2011 Ford Ranger XL starts at a base price of around $18,500, and the model range tops out with the Ranger Sport, which starts at around $23,000.
