Overview
The Ford Ranger was introduced to the compact pickup truck market in 1983. Although the Ranger has had substantial changes over the years, it has never had a complete redesign. But due to increased demand for smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, the Ranger likely will be kept in the Ford stable for another few years (recently, the company stated that the Minnesota plant where the Ranger is made would continue production until at least 2011). The Ranger shares its platform with the Mazda B-Series.

The Ranger for 2009 is more fuel-efficient, affordable and flexible. The 2009 model is offered in two cab styles: regular and extended SuperCab. The SuperCab is available with 2 or 4 doors, including two hinged rear access doors. SuperCabs come with a 6-foot cargo bed, while regular cabs also offer a longer 7-foot bed. Regular cabs seat 3, while SuperCabs can carry 5 with two fold-down rear jump seats. One 4-cylinder and two V-6 engines are available, and the Ranger comes in rear-wheel drive (RWD) or 4-wheel drive (4WD) versions.

Model Lineup
Trim levels for the 2009 Ford Ranger include XL, XLT, Sport and FX4 Off-Road. The XL model's standard equipment includes an anti-theft system; AM/FM stereo with clock; vinyl flooring; vinyl 60/40-split front bench seat; and P225/70R15 all-season tires on steel wheels. SuperCab XLs have cloth upholstery, and 4WD XL models are equipped with all-terrain tires. XLT models feature front and rear bumpers that match the truck's body color as well as a chrome H-bar grille for a bolder look. All XLTs include air conditioning; cloth upholstery; AM/FM/CD stereo; carpeting; and floor mats, while 4WD XLTs add on large fog lamps, heavy-duty gas shocks, and, for the SuperCab, tow hooks and rear jump seats. Sport models feature a black, horizontal grille with body-color surround in addition to fog lamps, vinyl flooring, heavy-duty gas shocks, tow hooks, and alloy wheels. SuperCab Sports offer side step bars and a Class III trailer hitch receiver. 4WD Sport models add tow hooks, skid plates, and for the 4-door SuperCab, P255/70R16 all-terrain tires on aluminum wheels. The only Ranger model offered with 4WD is the FX4 Off-Road version. To the base Sport model, Ford adds a limited-slip rear axle; Rancho shocks; skid plates; bed-rail- and tailgate-lip protectors; tilt leather-wrapped steering wheel; cruise control; power windows, mirrors and locks; remote keyless entry; bucket seats with driver's side manual lumbar adjustment; center floor console; vinyl flooring with front slush mats; and P255/70R16 all-terrain tires on aluminum wheels. Other options include leather seats, bed extender, Sirius satellite radio, and a 290-watt Pioneer sound system with 6-disc CD changer and auxiliary input jack.

Powertrain
The 2009 Ford Ranger offers two engine choices: a 2.3-liter inline 4-cylinder and 4.0-liter single-overhead-cam (SOHC) V-6. The 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine produces 143 hp and 154 lb.-ft. of torque and offers the highest fuel economy of any pickup, according to Ford. It is only available for 2WD models. The larger 4.0-liter, SOHC V-6 engine that produces 207 hp and 238 lb.-ft. of torque only is available for 4WD models. Both engines come standard with a 5-speed manual transmission, and a 5-speed automatic transmission is available. EPA fuel-economy ratings range from 21 mpg city/26 mpg highway for a 2WD 4-cylinder model with the manual transmission to 14 mpg city/17 mpg highway for a 4WD model with the 4.0-liter V-6 engine and automatic transmission. Properly equipped, the Ranger has a maximum towing capacity of 6000 pounds.

Safety
Standard safety features on the 2009 Ford Ranger include dual-stage front air bags with a front-passenger sensor, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, safety belts with front pre-tensioners, and side-intrusion door beams. Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) child-seat mounts are provided in the front passenger seat on all models. The front-passenger sensing system helps make sure air bags do not deploy on the passenger side when a child is in the front passenger seat. A tire-pressure monitor also is standard. Traction control and electronic stability control systems are not available.

The Ford Ranger has earned 5 stars for the driver and 4 stars for the front passenger in front-impact tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Regular-cab models have also received 5 stars for driver's side-impact tests, while extended-cab models received 4 stars. In rollover-resistance tests, Ford Ranger 2WD and 4WD models earned a 3-star rating.

Technology
All audio systems on the 2009 Ford Ranger (except the base AM/FM receiver) are equipped with a standard auxiliary audio input jack and are MP3 capable. Sirius satellite radio, which offers 130 channels of streamed digital radio, including commercial-free music, as well as sports, news and talk, is available on all trim levels and all models. The signals, which are beamed from studios to satellites, are transmitted to the ground, where vehicle receivers pick them up. These electromagnetic waves carrying information from the satellites are also picked up by ground repeaters to increase coverage in cities. Sometimes radio signals can be lost in cities with tall buildings. Like an AM signal, a satellite radio signal also can disappear when traveling under bridges.
