Models and Features
In addition to the standard equipment offered for the Mustang V6, the 2014 Ford Mustang GT adds a V-8 engine, revised rear axle ratio, dual exhaust outlets, automatic headlights, and LED fog lights. The GT's styling is also modified, with a different grille, front splitter, power-dome hood with functional heat extractors, "5.0L" fender badges, rear spoiler, and larger 18-inch aluminum wheels in a unique design.

The 2014 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 includes a long a list of performance-oriented upgrades, including a supercharged 5.8-liter V-8 engine. The Shelby GT500 also gets distinctive styling, larger forged aluminum wheels, unique instrumentation with Track Apps technology, sport-bolstered seats trimmed in leather with racing stripes, a steering wheel wrapped in Alcantara suede, ambient cabin lighting, Sync with App Link services, and an upgraded stereo system.

Options and Packages
The 2014 Mustang V6 and GT models are available in Premium trim levels that include leather seats, aluminum interior trim, ambient cabin lighting, and upgraded wheels. The Premium models also have Sync with App Link services, MyColor gauges with a 4.2-inch LCD information display, Track Apps technology, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with a universal garage door opener, power driver's seat, and an upgraded audio system.

For the Mustang GT, the Premium variant includes a Track package, which contains a helical rear differential with a 3.73:1 axle ratio, upgraded cooling and braking systems, revised stability control system calibration, and larger 19-inch wheels with summer performance tires.

Additional highlights from the Mustang's optional equipment menu, depending on the model selected, include performance and handling upgrades, as well as styling enhancements. Additional options include rear park-assist sensors, reversing camera, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, navigation system, premium audio system, Recaro performance seats, panoramic glass roof, and a variety of wheel sizes, designs, and finishes.

Under the Hood
Depending on the version selected, the 2014 Mustang is offered with a V-6 engine, V-8 engine, or a supercharged V-8 engine. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard, and a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting capability is optional.

The Mustang V6 gets a 3.7-liter V-6 engine generating 305 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 280 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,250 rpm. Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Ford Mustang Coupe receives an overall rating of 4 stars (out of a possible 5 stars). Note that rear-seat side-impact protection rates 3 stars. The Mustang Convertible is not rated by the NHTSA.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives both 2014 Mustang body styles a "Good" rating--the Institute's highest--in the moderate overlap frontal-impact test and in the rear-impact injury prevention test. The Mustang Convertible also gets a "Good" rating in the side-impact test, while the Mustang Coupe receives the second-highest "Acceptable" rating in this regard.

Ford includes side blind-spotter mirrors as standard equipment for all 2014 Mustangs, as well as MyKey technology that allows the car's owner to limit top speed and maximum stereo volume, to cancel the ability to turn off the stability control system, and more. Models equipped with Sync include 911 Assist, which, when a paired smartphone is present, activates in the event of an air bag deployment to put the car's occupants in touch with a live operator who can summon emergency responders. Mustangs can also be upgraded with reversing sensors and a reversing camera.

Additionally, Mustang buyers can choose Sync with App Link technology, which allows voice-activated control of applications on a paired smartphone, lets the driver stream music via Bluetooth, and can read incoming text messages to the driver. The system includes a free 3-year subscription to Sync Services, which includes turn-by-turn directions, personalized news feeds, and more.
