Overview

What's New for 2013:

  • Updated styling and wheel designs
  • Improved performance for GT models
  • 662-horsepower V-8 engine for Shelby GT500

Exterior Features
For 2013, standard, GT, Boss 302 and Shelby GT500 Mustang models are available in coupe or convertible body styles. The 2013 Mustang gets new HID headlights, LED running lights, and LED taillights.

Interior Features
An information display nestled between the gauges features new Track Apps technology, which allows the driver to track acceleration, braking and cornering forces.

Optional Features
Among the numerous options for the 2013 Mustang, the Glass Roof option for the coupe model is notable.

Under the Hood
The standard 2013 Mustang is equipped with a 3.7-liter V-6 engine making 305 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 280 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,250 rpm. A 6-speed manual gearbox with hill-start assist is standard, delivering power to the rear wheels. A 6-speed SelectShift automatic transmission is optional.

The Mustang GT has a 5.0-liter V-8 engine making 420 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 390 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,250 rpm when using premium gas. On regular gas, the engine makes less power. Transmission choices match the Mustang V-6, but the GT includes a standard limited-slip differential.

The Mustang Boss 302 has a 5.0-liter V-8 engine that generates 444 horsepower at 7,400 rpm and 380 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm. Premium gas is required for this engine. A short-throw, close-ratio 6-speed manual gearbox is the only transmission choice, driving the wheels through a 3.73 rear axle ratio with a limited-slip differential that employs carbon fiber clutch plates. Quad exhaust pipes are standard on the Boss 302, and both the suspension and brakes are revised for improved handling and responsiveness, Ford says.

The 2013 Shelby GT500 features a supercharged, 5.8-liter V-8 engine making 662 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 631 lb.-ft. of torque, 90% of which is available from 2,200 to 5,800 rpm. These figures make this engine among the most powerful regular production V-8s, according to Ford. The short-throw, close-ratio, 6-speed manual gearbox is paired with a carbon fiber driveshaft, and the Shelby GT500 features heavily modified suspension, braking, steering and engine cooling systems to handle the vehicle's claimed 200-mph top speed.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Ford Mustang coupe are:
  • Mustang V-6 with manual transmission: 19/29/22 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • Mustang V-6 with automatic transmission: 19/31/23 mpg
  • Mustang GT with manual transmission: 15/26/19 mpg
  • Mustang GT with automatic transmission: 18/25/20 mpg
  • Mustang Boss 302: 15/26/19 mpg
  • Mustang Shelby GT500: 15/24/18 mpg

Safety
The 2013 Mustang is not available with side curtain air bags, but does include traction and stability control, 4-wheel ventilated-disc anti-lock brakes, 4 air bags, and MyKey programmable safety features. The available Sync wireless connectivity offers 911 Assist service.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the Mustang coupe 4 (out of 5) stars overall for crash protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the Mustang Convertible a "Good" rating for frontal-, side- and rear-impact protection.
