  • Fusion Hybrid now offered in lower-priced S trim level

Introduction
The 2014 Ford Fusion is a midsize family sedan offered in three different trim levels and with a choice between a gasoline, gas-electric hybrid, and a plug-in gas-electric hybrid powertrain. The 2014 Fusion competes in one of the most popular segments of the market, and most of its direct competitors have been redesigned in the past couple of years. Those equally modern models include the Chevrolet Malibu, Honda Accord, Mazda 6, Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, and Volkswagen Passat. Additionally, the Fusion goes up against the Buick Regal, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, and Subaru Legacy.

Models and Features
The 2014 Fusion is offered in S, SE, and Titanium trim levels, and equipment varies depending on the powertrain selected, with Hybrid and Energi (plug-in hybrid) models equipped with more standard items than a regular Fusion.

The Fusion SE adds a 10-way power driver's seat, upgraded stereo, satellite radio, compass, Securicode keyless entry pad, body-color mirror caps, and aluminum wheels to the Fusion S model's list of standard features. The Fusion Titanium includes leather seats, MyFord Touch, a premium audio system with HD Radio, keyless passive entry with push-button starting, reversing camera, and Sync Services compared with the Fusion SE.

Hybrid models have eco-friendly cloth seats and a SmartGauge with EcoGuide instrument cluster, while the Energi comes standard with MyFord Mobile, MyFord Touch, Sync Services, leather upholstery, and heated front seats.

Options and Packages
Ford offers the Fusion S with few options. To access extras such as EcoBoost engines, leather seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, power sunroof, larger wheels and tires, and a variety of upgraded safety and infotainment technologies, buyers must select a Fusion SE or Titanium model.

Under the Hood
For 2014, Ford offers six different powertrains for the Fusion family sedan. A 175-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard. Options include a new 177-horsepower, turbocharged, 1.5-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine, and a carryover turbocharged, 2.0-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine generating 237 horsepower. All three of these engines are paired with a standard 6-speed automatic transmission, and an AWD system is optional with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine. Last year's 178-horsepower, turbocharged, 1.6-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine remains available, but only when paired with a manual gearbox.

The 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid is equipped with a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder gasoline engine, an 88-kW electric assist motor, a 1.4-kWh lithium-ion battery recharged by a regenerative braking system, and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). A full hybrid making a combined 188 horsepower, the Fusion Hybrid can travel at speeds up to 62 mph on battery power alone, Ford says. The Fusion Hybrid's trunk is smaller than a standard Fusion, measuring 12 cubic feet.

The Fusion Energi model swaps the Fusion Hybrid's 1.4-kWh lithium-ion battery for a larger 7.6-kWh lithium-ion battery, which allows the car to travel on electricity alone for up to 21 miles of distance and generate 195 combined horsepower, according to Ford. Once the battery pack is depleted, the car switches to gas-electric hybrid operation. The driver can select when the Fusion Energi operates in EV (electric vehicle) mode, and Ford says it takes less than 7 hours to recharge the battery using a standard household power outlet. Purchase the optional 240-volt quick-charger, and the charging time drops to 2.5 hours, Ford says. Keep in mind that the Fusion Energi's trunk measures 8.2 cubic feet, nearly half what a standard Fusion holds.

Fuel Economy
Official EPA fuel-economy ratings for the 2014 Fusion were not finalized as this overview was written, and with regard to the new 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine, all Ford will say is that it is more fuel efficient than the motor it replaces.

Safety Ratings and Technology
At the time this overview was written, neither the NHTSA nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had provided official crash-test ratings for the 2014 Fusion.

Eight standard air bags protect the Fusion's occupants. Additionally, the car is equipped with MyKey programmable safety features, which allow the owner to program seat belt usage reminders, speed alerts and limits, reduced maximum stereo volume, and more. Sync hands-free connectivity is also standard, and when a paired smartphone is inside the vehicle and the air bags deploy, a service called 911 Assist immediately contacts an emergency operator who can speed rescuers to the scene of the accident.

The 2014 Fusion is also available with expanded Sync Services, a reversing camera system, rear park-assist sensors, inflatable rear seat belts, a blind-spot monitoring system with cross-traffic alert, a lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist system, and an adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning system. Additionally, the 2014 Fusion is offered with an active park-assist system, MyFord Touch infotainment, Sony premium audio system with a touch-sensitive control panel, and more.
