Overview
For 2008, Ford has redesigned the Focus inside and out in an attempt to bring back sales that have drifted toward the import brands. A new grille that matches Ford's other products is prominent, as is new interior lighting, improved ride and handling characteristics, and a quieter cabin.

Model Lineup
One of Ford's goals for the Focus, the company says, was to simplify the ordering process. For 2008, the Focus is available in either a 4-door sedan or a 2-door coupe, and both models are available in two series: SE and SEL. Packages optional include the Sport and Deluxe for the SEL model only.

Standard on SE models is Ford's new Ice Blue interior lighting that replaces the green shade. The ambient interior lighting system offers occupants a choice of seven different mood options. A new top-of-dash display is designed to show all vital information at the driver's eye level.

Standard features on both models include manual side-view mirrors; tinted glass; AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with auxiliary input jack; two 12-volt powerpoints; 60/40 split/fold rear seat; tire inflation kit; 15-inch wheels; and a rear defroster.

Options include 16-inch aluminum wheels; audio system with 6-disc CD changer; Sirius satellite radio; Ford Sync; anti-lock brakes with traction control; power moonroof; heated seats; leather-trimmed seats; and floormats. A tire inflation kit is standard, but an extra spare tire is only available at an extra charge.

Powertrain
The engine for the front-wheel-drive 2008 Ford Focus comes in two different versions, depending on where you live. The 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine first comes as an Ultra-Low-Emission Vehicle (ULEV) that makes 140 hp and 136 lb.-ft. of torque. A few states will require the second version of this engine, a Partial Zero-Emission Vehicle or PZEV, which makes 132 hp and 133 lb.-ft. of torque. Ford claims the engine is cleaner than some hybrid gas-electric vehicles, and yields 20 percent of the hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions of a ULEV engine. Fuel economy numbers for 2008 have yet to be released. Two transmissions are available: a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic.

The 2008 Focus features 4-wheel independent suspension with all-new spring rates, dampers, bushings, and stabilizer bars, all designed to improve handling and reduce vibration. The brake system is all new for 2008, with lighter but stronger calipers, larger front rotors up front for the disc brakes, and an optional anti-lock braking system.

Safety
Like other Ford models, the Personal Safety System is standard on the 2008 Focus, and includes many items that Ford says might incur an extra charge on other compact vehicles in the segment, like thorax side air bags and side curtain air bags. The side canopy bags feature "roll-fold" technology, which is designed to slide between the glass and occupants as it inflates to protect the passenger from sustaining impact injuries if a head is resting against the side glass.

Optional safety features for the SEL model include a battery saver feature that will turn off interior lights after 20 minutes to save the battery; Belt-Minder seat belt reminder system; child safety rear door locks; and the Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system.

Technology
The Focus for 2008 is offering Ford Sync, a program that was co-developed with Microsoft and is exclusive to Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles. Ford Sync is a customizable media system that allows the driver to use a "Push to Talk" button on the steering wheel that's compatible with a Bluetooth-equipped phone for hands-free speaking. The program also offers voice-to-text capabilities, by which your text messages become audible so you can hear them when you're driving. A USB port allows you to charge your iPod, MP3, or other USB-compatible device.
