Introduction
The 2014 Ford Flex is a 3-row, 7-passenger crossover SUV sharing a platform and powertrains with the Ford Explorer and Ford Taurus. With 83.2 cu. ft. of cargo space, it lines up against other midsize SUVs including the Honda Pilot, Mazda CX-9, Nissan Pathfinder, and Toyota Highlander.

Models and Features
The 2014 Flex is sold in SE, SEL, and Limited trim levels. Standard equipment for the Flex SE includes Sync Bluetooth connectivity, front and rear air conditioning, power windows, power mirrors, power door locks, remote keyless entry, cruise control, and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. Cloth seat upholstery is standard, along with a 6-way power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, auto-dimming interior mirror, and a stereo with a CD player and an auxiliary audio input jack. The Flex SE rides on 17-inch aluminum wheels and is equipped with automatic headlights, an Easy Fuel capless fuel filler, and a keyless entry pad.

Choose the Flex SEL, and this SUV is equipped with 18-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, heated exterior mirrors, and upgraded exterior trim. Inside, the Flex SEL gets MyFord Touch technology with an 8-inch touch-screen display, voice recognition, and Sync Services. Dual-zone automatic climate control, a 10-way power driver's seat, 6-way power front passenger's seat, and heated front seats are also included for this version, and the Flex SEL is treated to simulated wood interior trim, satellite radio, universal garage door opener, and a cargo net.

The Flex Limited is the most luxurious trim level, equipped with perforated leather upholstery, real wood trim on the steering wheel, power-adjustable pedals, and memory for the driver's settings. A premium 12-speaker audio system with HD Radio is also included for the Flex Limited, along with a navigation system, passive keyless entry and push-button starting, power rear liftgate, 110-volt power inverter and outlet, ambient cabin lighting, and laminated front window glass that helps provide a quieter ride. The Flex Limited is also equipped with several standard safety technologies, plus HID headlights, LED taillights, power-folding outside mirrors, and 19-inch aluminum wheels.

Options and Packages
Options for the 2014 Flex are dependent upon the trim level. All three Flex models can be equipped with inflatable rear seat belts and a rear-seat entertainment system. Additionally, the Flex SE is offered with roof rails and satellite radio.

Choose the Flex SEL to access upgrades like leather seats, premium audio system, navigation system, glass-panel Vista Roof, and second-row bucket seats separated by a refrigerated center console. This trim level is also offered with a reversing camera, blind-spot information system, cross-traffic alert, remote engine starting, power rear liftgate, and 20-inch aluminum wheels. A Trailer Towing package boosts towing capacity to 4,500 lbs.

The Flex Limited is available with several exclusive options, starting with a twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter, EcoBoost V-6 engine. Additionally, Active Park Assist, adaptive cruise control with Collision Warning with Brake Support, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and a power-folding third-row seat with a tailgate party setting are offered only on this version. The Flex Limited can also be upgraded with a Vista Roof, Trailer Towing package, and 20-inch aluminum wheels.

Under the Hood
The 2014 Flex is equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that generates 287 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 254 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. A 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control delivers the power to the front wheels. All-wheel drive (AWD) is optional.

A twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter, EcoBoost V-6 engine is available for the Flex Limited, paired only with AWD. It generates 365 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 350 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,500 rpm. On this trim level, the 6-speed automatic transmission is equipped with steering wheel paddle shifters.

All Flex trim levels are equipped with Torque Vectoring Control for improved cornering performance, and Curve Control technology to help reduce understeer when the driver enters a corner too quickly.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the 2014 Flex SE and SEL return 18 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 20 mpg in combined driving when equipped with front-wheel drive. The optional AWD system drops those figures to 17 mpg, 23 mpg, and 19 mpg, respectively.

The Flex Limited model's twin-turbo V-6 and standard AWD result in fuel economy ratings of 16 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway, and 18 mpg in combined driving.

Safety Ratings and Technology
Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has published crash-test results for the 2014 Flex as this overview is written.

Standard safety equipment includes Sync 911 Assist service, MyKey programmable safety features, blind-spot side mirrors, and rear park-assist sensors. Inflatable rear seat belts are optional on all Flex trim levels, while the Flex SEL can be optioned with a reversing camera and a blind-spot information system with cross-traffic alert. The Flex Limited is exclusively equipped with rain-sensing wipers and is the only version offered with an adaptive cruise control system with forward-collision warning with Brake Support.
