Exterior Features
The Ford Flex is a 7-passenger family wagon that is also available in a 6-passenger configuration with optional second-row captain's chairs. The base SE trim features 17-inch wheels, automatic headlights, fog lights, and rear parking sensors. The SEL trim upgrades to 18-inch wheels, and the Limited trim features 19-inch polished alloy wheels, Xenon headlights, LED taillights, and a power tailgate. The Titanium trim adds 20-inch wheels and distinctive exterior styling.
Interior Features
The 2012 Ford Flex SE trim features air conditioning and some power accessories, including a 6-way power driver's seat and a 6-speaker sound system. The SEL includes dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, more power accessories, satellite radio with Bluetooth connectivity, and a navigation system. The Limited offers perforated leather upholstery for the first two rows, upgraded navigation system, wood-trimmed steering wheel, power-adjustable pedals, and a 12-speaker Sony sound system. The Titanium trim adds faux-suede seat inserts and other styling upgrades.
Optional Features
Roof side rails are optional on the 2012 Ford Flex, as is a multi-panel rear sunroof. A rear-seat entertainment system is available on all trims except the SE. Many standard features on upper trims are optional on lower trims.
Under the Hood
The 2012 Ford Flex's standard power plant is a 3.5-liter V-6 engine rated at 262 horsepower that works with a 6-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive (FWD), with all-wheel drive (AWD) available. The Limited and Titanium trims offer an optional 3.5-liter, turbocharged V-6 engine rated at 355 horsepower that comes standard with AWD. Paddle shifters are added to the automatic transmission on the Limited and Titanium trims.
Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy figures for the 2012 Ford Flex are:
- Flex with standard V-6 engine and FWD: 17/24/19 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- Flex with standard V-6 engine and AWD: 16/22/18 mpg
- Flex with turbocharged V-6 engine: 16/21/18 mpg
Safety
Standard safety features on the 2012 Ford Flex include anti-lock disc brakes, traction control, front-seat side air bags, side curtain air bags, and rear parking sensors. Optional is the Lane Tracking package, which includes lane-departure warning and blind-spot monitoring systems.
In government crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Ford Flex received 4 (out of 5) stars for rollover protection. In safety tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Flex received a "Good" rating-the Institute's highest--in all measures.
