Overview
Ford first entered the large crossover segment with the 2005 Freestyle (now known as the Taurus X), a large wagon-like crossover that was long on utility but short on style. The Flex's styling, based closely on the Ford Fairlane concept car first seen at the 2005 North American International Auto Show, represents a radical departure for Ford. The Flex stands out with a boxy body reminiscent of the first-generation Scion xB, deeply grooved sides, and a black or silver roof that contrasts sharply with the tinted windows and blacked-out side pillars.

Under the skin, the Flex shares its platform and powertrain with the Taurus and Taurus X. The Flex comes with standard seating for 7, with 15 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third-row seat. All passenger seats (including the front passenger seat) can be folded flat, opening up more than 83 cubic feet of cargo space. Innovative interior features include an optional compressor-driven refrigerator nestled between the second-row seats. The refrigerator is large enough to accommodate seven 12-oz. cans or two 20-oz. bottles, and Ford claims that it can cool them from room temperature to 41 degrees in about 2.5 hours-40 percent faster, the manufacturer adds, than a standard home refrigerator.

Model Lineup
Ford offers the 2009 Flex in SE, SEL and Limited models. All-wheel drive is available on all except for the entry-level SE, which includes power windows, locks and driver's seat; automatic headlights; single-zone front climate control and rear air conditioning; 18-inch painted aluminum wheels; cloth seats; leather-trimmed shifter and steering wheel; rear parking assist; cruise control; and a single-disc AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo with auxiliary input jack. Options include reclining second-row seats; Ford/Microsoft Sync; an upgraded stereo; roof rails; remote starting system; and 19-inch wheels.

The SEL model adds leather upholstery; heated and power-adjustable front seats; dual-zone front climate control; heated mirrors; Sony premium stereo with 6-disc CD changer and Sirius satellite radio; integrated universal garage door opener; and 18-inch machined aluminum wheels. Along with the options available on the SE model, the SEL offers the Vista roof, which provides an opening moonroof for front passengers and a non-opening 4-pane glass roof for second- and third-row passengers; rear-seat DVD player; second-row console refrigerator; Convenience package (110-volt outlet, power-adjustable pedals, power tailgate, and memory for driver's seat and mirrors); and Lighting package (HID headlights, LED taillights, ambient interior LED lighting with seven user-selectable colors).

The top-of-the-line Limited model gets 19-inch polished aluminum wheels; HID headlights; LED taillights; premium perforated-leather seats; ambient lighting; power-adjustable pedals; Sync; and second-row footrests. Additional options include those offered on the Flex SEL as well as a DVD navigation system with Sirius Travel Link and backup camera.

Powertrain
All versions of the 2009 Ford Flex are powered by a 24-valve, 3.5 liter V-6 engine with variable timing for the intake camshaft. Power output is 262 hp at 6250 rpm and 248 lb.-ft. of torque at 4500 rpm. The ULEV II-compliant engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and runs on regular (87 octane) fuel. EPA fuel-economy estimates are 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway for FWD models and 16 mpg city/22 mpg highway for AWD versions. The Flex features Ford's new EasyFuel capless fuel filler. Not only is there no cap to lose, but EasyFuel provides a tighter seal which reduces the release of smog-forming fuel vapors into the atmosphere, Ford says.

The Flex's optional AWD system is designed for all-weather traction, and can direct up to 100 percent of the engine's power to either the front or rear axles. The Flex does not have a low-range transfer case and therefore is not suited to serious off-roading. An optional Class III towing package allows the Flex to tow up to 4500 pounds.

Safety
The 2009 Ford Flex features a healthy complement of both active and passive safety features. All Flex models come equipped with 4-wheel anti-lock disk brakes and electronic stability and traction control (which Ford refers to as AdvanceTrac with RSC, or Roll Stability Control). Inside the cabin, occupants are protected by dual front air bags with occupant-sensing deactivation for the passenger side; front seat belt pre-tensioners; front-seat-mounted torso air bags; three-row side curtain air bags; and headrests at all seating positions.

At the time of writing, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had crash-tested the 2009 Flex.

Technology
The 2009 Flex is a showcase for Ford's latest electronic gadgets. The Sync system, co-developed with Microsoft, provides stereo integration and voice control for iPod and Zune media players. Sync also provides Bluetooth phone connectivity, and will read incoming text messages aloud to the driver. Sync has also added a new feature for 2009: In the event of an air bag deployment, the system can use the paired Bluetooth phone to call 911. The Flex's optional voice-operated navigation system can be supplemented with Sirius Travel Link, which provides real-time traffic, coast-to-coast weather, and gas-price information from over 120,000 service stations.
