What's New for 2014:

  • Larger brakes
  • Increased towing and payload capacities

The 2014 Ford F-Series Super Duty is a full-size pickup truck offered in rear- and 4-wheel-drive (4WD) F-250, F-350, and F-450 designations powered by a gasoline- or diesel-powered V-8 engine. Buyers have their choice of five distinct trim levels, as well as three cab styles, varying bed lengths, single or dual rear wheels, and several option packages. Competitors include the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 HD, GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 HD, and Ram 2500 and 3500.

Models and Features
Like all full-size pickups, countless configurations is the name of the game for the 2014 Ford F-Series Super Duty. Part of that comes from the selection of trim levels, starting with the XL, which is equipped with vinyl flooring and upholstery, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, basic 2-speaker audio system, front 40/20/40 split bench seat, tow package, 17-in. steel wheels, tailgate-assist mechanism, and, in the case of 4WD models, manual locking hubs.

More common creature comforts are available with the popular mid-level XLT variant. Among the upgrades are cruise control, carpeting, power windows and door locks, CD player and auxiliary input jack, infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity, cloth upholstery, chrome bumpers, heated power mirrors, and 18-in. alloy wheels.

The feeling is even more upscale inside the 2014 Ford Super Duty Lariat, home to dual-zone climate control, power-adjustable foot pedals, auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather upholstery, premium audio, 110-volt household-style power outlet, power-sliding rear window, and power front seats with 10-way adjustment. 4WD Lariats also utilize an electronic shift-on-the-fly transfer case.

If that assortment of amenities doesn't appeal, those on the F-Series Super Duty King Ranch just might with its standard remote start system, unique leather upholstery and trim, navigation unit, heated and cooled front captain's chairs with memory, illuminated cab steps, and two-tone paint. Topping that is the 2014 Super Duty Platinum, which pulls out all the stops with wood interior accents, heated steering wheel, chrome running boards, and Ford's innovative built-in tailgate step.

Options and Packages
As noted, choice is high on truck buyers' list of priorities, a point Ford has addressed with the Super Duty's trim levels, cab styles, and abundant assortment of options. Included in this mix are the XL Value package, consisting of a 4-speaker sound system with a CD player, chrome bumpers, and cruise control; FX4 Off-Road package with hill-descent control, skid plates, upgraded shocks, and all-terrain tires; XLT Premium package, within which Ford has bundled additional chrome exterior trim, power driver's seat with 6-way adjustment, automatic headlights, rear park-assist sensors, fog lights, and power-adjustable foot pedals; and the Lariat Ultimate package offering a power moonroof, tailgate step, power-telescoping tow mirrors, heated and cooled front seats, and an infotainment system with navigation and HD Radio.

Under the Hood
In typical heavy-duty truck fashion, the 2014 Super Duty is available with stout gas and diesel engines. Covering the gas angle is a 6.2-liter V-8 that produces 385 horsepower and 405 lb.-ft. of torque in models with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) under 10,000 lbs., or 316 horsepower/397 lb.-ft. of torque for Super Duty variants with a GVWR over 10,000 lbs. A 6-speed automatic is the only available transmission.

Those who need more power under the hood may want to instead consider the turbocharged 6.7-liter V-8, offering 400 horsepower and 800 lb.-ft. of torque and a maximum payload capacity of 7,260 lbs. When properly equipped, a Super Duty fitted with this Power Stroke diesel engine can tow up to 23,900 lbs.

Fuel Economy
The EPA does not provide fuel-economy estimates for heavy-duty trucks.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Ford F-250 crew cab (the only Super Duty model tested) received an overall rating of 4 (out of 5) stars. As this overview is written, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had not crash tested the 2014 Ford Super Duty.

All F-250, F-350, and F-450 models are equipped with 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, 6 air bags, and trailer sway control. For the XLT trim and above, the list of standard features also includes an integrated trailer brake controller, while the Lariat tacks on a rearview camera and rear park-assist sensors.
