Overview
Ford's F-Series Super Duty line of pickups provides customers with trucks capable of performing tasks requiring heavy payload and towing capabilities. The Super Duty lineup was launched for the 1999 model year and has been redesigned for 2008. Super Duty pickups are available in three-quarter-ton F-250 and F-350 models, plus the new-for-2008 F-450, Ford's first-ever Class IV pickup. Super Duty pickups can be ordered with RWD or 4WD. Three cab styles are available: 2-door regular cab, 4-door SuperCab with small rear doors, and the Crew Cab with 4 full-size doors. Regular cabs have an 8-foot bed, while SuperCabs and Crew Cabs are offered with 6 3/4- or 8-foot beds. Dual-rear-wheel (DRW) versions of the F-350 are offered for greater hauling capacity, and the F-450 pickup has dual rear wheels as well. Regular cab models have seating for 3, while SuperCabs and Crew Cabs have standard seating for 6. Front bucket seats are available for 5-passenger seating.

Model Lineup

FX4 models are available only with 4WD. They add a limited-slip rear axle; Rancho shocks; skid plates; floor mats; leather-wrapped steering wheel; keypad entry; and LT275/70R18 tires on chromed steel wheels with hub caps. Most F-350 DRW models have a 15,000-pound trailer hitch and the F-450 has a 16,000-pound hitch.

King Ranch and Harley-Davidson packages are available. Both have several luxury features, as well as unique exterior and interior trim. The Harley-Davidson F-250 and the F-450 pickup come standard with the 6.4-liter Power Stroke turbo diesel V-8 engine.

Powertrain
Three engine options are available on 2008 Ford F-Series Super Duty models. The base engine is a 5.4-liter Triton V-8 that produces 300 hp at 5000 rpm and 365 lb.-ft. of torque at 3750 rpm. The second engine choice is a 6.8-liter Triton V-10 that delivers 362 hp at 4750 rpm and 457 lb.-ft. of torque at 3250 rpm. New for 2008 is an optional 6.4-liter Power Stroke turbo-diesel V-8 engine that generates 350 hp at 3000 rpm and 650 lb.-ft. of torque at 2000 rpm. The standard transmission is a 6-speed manual, and a 5-speed automatic with tow/haul mode is optional. The available 4WD is a part-time system that should not be left engaged on dry pavement and includes low-range gearing.

F-350 models with dual rear wheels can be outfitted with the F-450's heavy-duty radius-arm front suspension, which Ford says offers the segment's best turning radius. This suspension has larger axles for more payload and towing capacity, and uses a larger stabilizer bar. 4WD Super Duty pickups have a lighter duty version of this suspension with a narrower front track. 2WD models have a twin I-beam front suspension, also with a narrow front track. Properly equipped, an F-350 Super Duty can tow 16,000 pounds and haul 5720 pounds of payload, while an F-450 can tow up to 21,600 pounds and haul 6120 pounds of payload.

Safety
Standard safety features on the 2008 Ford F-Series Super Duty include dual front air bags with a passenger air bag "off" switch, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, and a tire-pressure monitor. Traction control and a rearview camera are optional. Front side air bags, curtain side air bags and electronic stability control are not available on Super Duty models.

Technology
The available rearview camera on the 2008 Ford F-Series Super Duty is mounted in the tailgate handle bezel and the image projects on the rearview mirror when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. The image shows green lines that denote the width of the vehicle. The lines turn red when the system detects the truck is getting too close to an object. The tailgate can be removed without needing to unhook or unplug the camera.
