Overview

The 2011 Ford F-150, or F-Series, is a full-size pickup truck that has been on sale in the United States since 1948. It has proved popular with consumers and it often earns the automaker a "best-selling model" designation, thanks to its countless variants. The pickup is a traditional body-on-frame design with rear leaf springs and a solid rear axle. Now in its 12th generation, last redesigned for the 2009 model year, the F-150 is offered with three different cab configurations (Regular, Super Cab, and Super Crew) with cabin space for up to 6 passengers. Powertrain choices include a list of 6- and 8-cylinder engines, with automatic transmissions, and 2- and 4-wheel drive. New for 2011, Ford has introduced all-new, more powerful and more fuel-efficient engines to its lineup. They include a turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6, promising the power of a V-8 with much more efficiency, and a 6.2-liter V-8, the performance engine found under the hood of the SVT Raptor. All of the engines are mated to a new 6-speed automatic transmission.

The 2011 Ford F-150 is sold in no fewer than nine different models: F-150 XL, F-150 STX, F-150 XLT, F-150 FX2/FX4, F-150 Lariat, F-150 King Ranch, F-150 Platinum, F-150 SVT Raptor, and F-150 Harley-Davidson. There are also three different cabs (Regular, Super Cab, and Super Crew) to seat up to 6 passengers. Lastly, the automaker builds its F-150 with standard 126-inch wheelbase, or an extended 145-inch wheelbase. While the base model is fitted with vinyl upholstery, air conditioning and steel wheels, upgraded models rival luxury sedans with leather upholstery, full power accessories, and navigation systems.

The 2011 Ford F-150 is offered with four different engines. The standard engine is a 3.7-liter V-6 rated at 302 horsepower. Optional is a 5.0-liter V-8 engine rated at 360 horsepower. The largest available V-8 engine is a 6.2-liter unit rated at 411 horsepower. Breaking from tradition, the automaker has introduced a turbocharged, 3.5-liter V-6 engine rated at 365 horsepower that will eventually replace many of its V-8 choices. Many of the engines will run on E85, but at reduced power and with less efficiency. A new 6-speed automatic transmission is standard, as is rear-wheel drive (2WD). Four-wheel drive (4WD) is optional. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 Ford F-150 between 12 mpg city and 23 mpg highway, depending on chassis, engine and transmission.

The 2011 Ford F-150 XL 2WD starts at a base price of around $22,400, and the model range tops out with the F-150 Harley-Davidson, which starts at around $49,000.
