For the 2008 Ford F-150, not much has changed-except for the addition of the new Chip Foose Edition, featuring the new 5.4-liter, 450-hp Triton V-8 engine that's turbocharged and intercooled, making this the most powerful Ford F-150 since the 2004 SVT Lightning. The 2008 model also features new Lariat Limited trim, XL SuperCrew, cargo management system, and other amenities. Ford hopes that this limited edition will tide pickup aficionados over until next year, when the reportedly all-new 2009 F-150 hits the streets. Competition for the Ford F-150 includes the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan and Dodge Ram.

Model Lineup
For 2008, the Ford F-150 lineup includes three body styles: regular cab, extended cab (SuperCab), and crew cab (SuperCrew). Three box lengths (5.5 ft., 6.5 ft. and 8.0 ft.) and two box styles (Styleside and Flareside) are available. A total of nine trim levels are offered, including the new Chip Foose Edition. The base trim is XL, with 17-inch steel wheels, vinyl seats and air conditioning (in SuperCrew). Next up is STX, with the addition of air conditioning; body-colored bumpers; sportier wheels; cloth 40/20/40 split bench seat; and upgraded sound system with CD changer and auxiliary audio jack. The XLT model adds chrome exterior trim, upgraded cloth interior, cruise control, and full power accessories. Then there's FX2 (2-wheel drive), with 18-inch wheels; black grille; leather-wrapped steering wheel; and bucket seats with a center console. The FX4 (4-wheel drive) adds underbody skid plates, heavy-duty shocks, and re-tuned springs. Lariat trim is decked out in brushed aluminum and wood accents and includes a power driver seat, leather upholstery, trip computer and automatic climate control. The fancier, and new, Lariat Limited trim adds a monochromatic White Sand paint scheme; 22-inch alloy wheels with body-color accents; polished running boards; 2-tone leather upholstery; unique instrument cluster trim; and smoked taillights. King Ranch trim (SuperCrew only) includes 2-tone exterior paint, Western saddle leather upholstery, and wood grain interior accents. The Harley-Davidson model includes monochromatic black or black and copper paint; 22-inch alloy wheels; sport tuned suspension; black and copper leather seating; and a Harley-Davidson badge.

The Chip Foose Edition begins life as an FX2 Sport model before being customized at a special modification center and then sent off to Ford dealers. The Foose Edition boasts a 5.4-liter Triton turbocharged and intercooled V-8 engine. It also has suspension modifications, including Eibach coil springs in front and Eibach leaf springs in rear, and front and rear Sachs dampers and jounce bouncers; 22-inch forged, polished Foose wheels and P275/45R22 Pirelli tires; Ford Racing exhaust; a new Foose-designed grille with horizontal bars; Foose-designed styling package; unique front fender badge; and Foose-designed and fabricated wheel flares, lower side and front rocker moldings. On the inside, the Foose Edition gets embroidered headrests with Chip Foose autograph, Foose embroidered floor mats, and a unique leather-wrapped center console with a personalized vehicle identification number (VIN) and build-sequence.

Options include a Saleen suspension (Harley-Davidson trim); remote vehicle start; navigation system; backup camera; rear parking sensor; power-adjustable pedals; overhead rail storage; rear cargo storage unit; and a sunroof.

Standard power for the base trim XL, STX, XLT and FX2 Sport (regular cab only, not available with Flareside) is the 4.2-liter OHV 12-valve V-6 engine that produces 202 hp at 4350 rpm and 260 lb.-ft. of torque at 3750 rpm, with power transferred through a 5-speed manual transmission. An electronic 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission is available with the 4.2-liter V-6 engine (standard on Flareside). The 4.6-liter Triton SOHC 16-valve V-8 engine with 4-speed electronic automatic overdrive transmission (standard on regular cab 4x4, SuperCab and SuperCrew, optional on regular cab 4x2) generates 248 hp at 4750 rpm and 294 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. The 5.4-liter Triton 3V SOHC 24-valve V-8 engine with electronic 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission (standard on FX4, Lariat, Lariat Limited, King Ranch and Harley-Davidson) delivers 300 hp at 5000 rpm and 365 lb.-ft. of torque at 3750 rpm. The Chip Foose Edition carries the 5.4-liter Triton turbocharged and intercooled V-8 engine, which provides 450 hp at 5200 rpm and 500 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm, with power transferred through a 4-speed electronic overdrive automatic transmission. This is the most powerful Ford F-150 since the 2004 SVT Lightning. EPA fuel economy estimates are not yet available on the 2008 Ford F-150.

Standard and available safety items include dual-stage driver and front passenger air bags; safety belt pre-tensioners and energy management retractors; Ford's BeltMinder system, Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) child seat system; 4-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock braking system (ABS); SecuriLock anti-theft system; and spare tire and wheel lock. In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2008 Ford F-150, F-150 regular cab and F-150 extended cab all received a perfect 5-star rating in frontal driver and front passenger crash tests, while the vehicles were not rated for side crash tests. In rollover testing, F-150 models received a 4-star rating in 2- and 4-wheel drive.

For entertainment in the 2008 Ford F-150, choices include an AM/FM stereo with 6-disc, in-dash CD player with MP3 capability and auxiliary audio input jack (and speed-compensated volume control); 6-disc, in-dash CD changer with Audiophile sound system with MP3 capability, auxiliary audio input jack, with subwoofer and speed-compensated volume control; Sirius satellite radio with 6-month subscription and roof-mounted antenna; rear-seat DVD entertainment system; navigation radio with in-dash screen and DVD-ROM; and a navigation radio with in-dash screen, DVD-ROM, Audiophile sound system (6-disc, in-dash CD player, MP3 capability, auxiliary audio input jack, sub-woofer, and speed-compensated volume).
