Overview
The Explorer Sport Trac, which debuted in 2001, is the amalgamation of two best-sellers from Ford: the F-150 pickup and the Explorer SUV. Both of those models have undergone extensive makeovers in the recent past and the Sport Trac takes some of each model's attributes into 2008. The midsize Explorer Sport Trac rides on a stretched version of the Explorer's frame. Rear- and 4-wheel drive (2WD and 4WD) are offered, with V-6 or V-8 power. The Sport Trac has two rows of seats for 5-passenger capacity and a 4-foot-long composite cargo bed. The bed features tiered storage and integrated storage bins with drains. A lockable, watertight tonneau cover is available.

Model Lineup
The 2008 Ford Explorer Sport Trac comes in three trim levels: XLT, Limited and the new Adrenalin. XLT and Limited are available with 2WD or 4WD. All come with either a V-6 or a V-8 engine. XLT comes standard with cloth upholstery; front bucket seats; 60/40-split rear bench seat; air conditioning; tilt leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls; cruise control; power windows, door locks and foldaway outside mirrors; remote keyless entry; power sliding rear window; AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo with auxiliary input jack; anti-theft system; trip computer; fog lamps; cargo bed storage compartment; bed liner; Class II trailer hitch; roof rails; and P235/70R16 tires on aluminum wheels. The Limited adds automatic headlights; Ford Sync communications and entertainment system; 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat with lumbar adjustment; leather-wrapped shift knob; keypad entry; side steps; auto-dimming rearview mirror; and P235/65R18 tires. The new Adrenalin model will have XLT equipment, plus P255/50R20 Pirelli tires on 10-spoke polished alloy wheels. The Adrenalin also features new bodywork from the beltline down. The front and rear fascias drop 3.5 inches lower; the fenders lose their wheel lip moldings; the front fenders have functional vents behind the front wheels; and running boards with black rubber step pads are integrated into the body sides. Up front, the exclusive grille is larger in size, painted black and has a crosshatch pattern. At the back, a dual-tipped chrome exhaust tip juts out from the rear fascia.

Options for all 2008 Ford Explorer Sport Tracs include leather upholstery; an Audiophile stereo with 6-disc CD changer; a navigation system with voice activation; rear DVD entertainment system; Sirius satellite radio with a 6-month subscription; remote engine starting; sunroof; power adjustable pedals; aluminum cargo bed extender; two-piece lockable cargo bed hard tonneau cover; chrome package; and dual-zone automatic climate control.

Powertrain
The standard 4.0-liter V-6 engine on the 2008 Ford Explorer Sport Trac generates 210 hp at 5100 rpm and 254 lb.-ft. of torque at 3700 rpm. It comes with a 5-speed automatic transmission and is rated to tow up to 5260 pounds and carry as much as 1450 pounds of payload. Available optionally is Ford's 3-valve-per-cylinder, 4.6-liter V-8 engine, which delivers 292 hp at 5750 rpm and 300 lb.-ft. of torque at 3950 rpm. The V-8 engine is coupeed to a 6-speed automatic transmission, giving the Sport Trac a maximum tow rating of 7160 pounds and a payload capacity of 1450 pounds. The available 4WD system can be left engaged on dry pavement and has low-range gearing. EPA fuel economy ratings are 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway for the V-6 engine with 2WD; 13 mpg city/20 mpg highway for the V-8 engine with 2WD; and 13 mpg city/19 mpg highway for the V-6 or V-8 engine with 4WD.

Safety
Safety features that come standard on all 2008 Ford Explorer Sport Trac models include dual front air bags; torso-protecting front-seat-mounted side air bags; head-protecting side curtain air bags with rollover sensor; tire-pressure monitor; ABS; traction control; and Ford's Advance Trac electronic stability control with rollover mitigation. Rear park assist is optional. In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2008 Ford Explorer Sport Trac earned 5 (out of a possible 5) stars for the driver and front passenger in the front-impact test and 5 stars for front- and rear-seat passengers in the side-impact test. In rollover tests, the 2WD Sport Trac received 3 stars and the 4WD model received 4 stars.

Technology
Developed with Microsoft, Ford Sync provides a hands-free link to cell phones and MP3 players through a series of voice commands. It recognizes your cell phone's phonebook. It can read incoming text messages through the stereo system and allows occupants to respond with one of 15 predetermined messages. When an MP3 player is plugged in, Sync charges it and has access to the complete playlist. Occupants can tell Sync to play a specific song, artist, or genre of music. Sync will also stream songs wirelessly from a source like a phone/MP3 player enabled with Bluetooth technology.
