Overview

What's New for 2014:

  • Available rear air suspension system replaced by mechanical setup

Introduction
The 2014 Ford Expedition is full-size SUV with seating for up to 8 passengers and power delivered courtesy of a standard V-8 engine. Buyers have a choice of rear-wheel drive (RWD) or 4-wheel drive (4WD), three trim levels, and regular- or extended-length (EL) versions, the latter providing up to 130.8 cu. ft. of cargo space (22.5 cu. ft. more than the base model). Competitors include the Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, Nissan Armada, and the Toyota Sequoia.

Models and Features
There are no bare-bones 2014 Expedition models, as evidenced by the base XLT trim level and its standard Sync infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity, text-messaging capability, and satellite radio. This version of Ford's large SUV also features a tilt steering wheel, 18-in. alloy wheels, running boards, rear park-assist sensors, power-adjustable foot pedals, second-row 40/20/40 and third-row 50/50 split bench seats, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Covering the middle of the Expedition lineup is the Limited, decked out with a Class IV trailer tow setup, upgraded audio system with a subwoofer, power tailgate, 110-volt household-style power outlet, perforated leather upholstery, power-folding third-row seat, heated and cooled front seats, and memory settings for the driver.

One step up from the Limited is the 2014 Ford Expedition King Ranch. This top-of-the-line SUV is equipped with premium leather upholstery, power-retractable running boards, voice-activated navigation system, HD Radio, chrome roof rack, and more.

Options and Packages
Among the 2014 Expedition's notable options are a Driver Vision package consisting of a rearview camera and rain-sensing wipers, rear-seat entertainment system, second-row captain's chairs, and leather-clad heated and cooled front seats for the XLT. That base model can also be upgraded with a power tilt/slide moonroof, power tailgate, power-retractable running boards, and the voice-activated navigation system. Twenty-inch alloy wheels are offered for the Expedition as well.

Under the Hood
All 2014 Ford Expeditions are equipped with a 5.4-liter V-8 engine that produces 310 horsepower and 365 lb.-ft. of torque. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard. The SUV has a maximum payload capacity of 1,690 lbs. and, when properly equipped, can tow loads weighing up to 9,200 lbs.

Fuel Economy
Full-size body-on-frame SUVs are not known for being fuel-efficient, and the 2014 Ford Expedition is no exception. In RWD form, the EPA estimates drivers will average just 14 mpg around town, though that number is expected to climb as high as 20 mpg when cruising consistently on the highway. Those who opt for 4WD will see fuel economy drop to 13 mpg and 18 mpg, respectively.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Ford Expedition received an overall rating of 4 (out of 5) stars. As this overview is written, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had not crash tested the 2014 Expedition.

All versions of this large SUV feature 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, 6 air bags, and trailer sway control, while Limited and King Ranch Expeditions add an integrated trailer brake controller, front and rear park-assist sensors, and a rearview camera.
