Exterior FeaturesThe 2013 Ford Expedition is a full-size, traditional body-on-frame SUV sold in regular- and extended-length models. Trim levels include XL, XLT, Limited, and King Ranch. Aluminum wheels are standard.
Interior FeaturesThe 2013 Expedition is equipped with two rows of seats and can seat up to 5 passengers in standard XL trim. To get a third-row seat, buyers need to select at least an XLT trim.
Optional FeaturesThe 2013 Expedition can be equipped with leather, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, Sync with App Link, and a premium sound system with HD Radio. Also available are power-adjustable pedals, power tailgate, PowerFold third-row seat, and MyFord Touch technology with mobile Wi-Fi and navigation.
Under the HoodThe Expedition's flex-fuel capable 5.4-liter V-8 engine generates 310 horsepower at 5,100 rpm and 365 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,600 rpm. A 6-speed automatic transmission delivers power to the rear (2WD) or all four wheels (4WD). The Expedition can tow up to 9,200 pounds.
One key differentiator for the Expedition is its independent rear suspension. The compact design provides greater passenger space in the third-row seat, and allows the third-row seat to fold into the floor to expand cargo space.
Fuel EconomyFord makes the following fuel-economy estimates for the Expedition:
- Expedition 2WD: 14/20/16 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- Expedition 4WD: 13/18/15 mpg
SafetyThe 2013 Ford Expedition is equipped with 6 air bags, including side curtain air bags for all three rows of seats. Additional standard safety features are traction and stability control with roll stability control, trailer sway control, 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes, and side blind-spot mirrors.
Ford installs MyKey programmable safety features in every Expedition, allowing parents to program features such as top vehicle speed, maximum stereo volume, seat belt usage chimes, and other features designed to help keep younger drivers safe behind the wheel. The Expedition also has an SOS Post Crash Alert system that activates with air bag deployment, unlocking the doors and activating the hazard flashers and the horn to help rescuers quickly find the vehicle.
Safety-related options include front and rear park assist, rain-sensing wipers, and a reversing camera.
As this overview was written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had performed crash tests on the 2013 Ford Expedition. However, the structurally identical 2012 Expedition received a 4- (out of 5) star overall rating from the NHTSA.
