  • Power-folding running boards

  • New standard keyless entry keypad

The 2008 Ford Expedition is basically a carryover from the 2007 model's all-new styling. But the Funkmaster Flex Edition and King Ranch Edition have been added, along with rear-view camera, power-folding running boards and other features to sweeten this year's offerings. The full-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) is designed for families that need to do a lot of towing and hauling, Ford says. This is the third generation of the model that debuted in 1997. Competition includes the Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV.

Model Lineup
The 2008 Ford Expedition offers four models in regular or extended length: XLT and XLT EL (extended length); Eddie Bauer and Eddie Bauer EL; Limited and Limited EL, and King Ranch and King Ranch EL. The Funkmaster Flex Edition is available in limited production. Two- or 4-wheel drive (2WD or 4WD) is available. Standard equipment includes running boards; speed control; keyless entry keypad; leather-wrapped steering wheel; floor shifter; full-length overhead console; cloth captain's chairs; and dual-zone electronic automatic temperature control in the rear (except on XLT and XLT EL). The Eddie Bauer editions add a power-folding third-row seat; 17-inch machined aluminum wheels (with 18-inch machined aluminum wheels optional, and standard on Eddie Bauer EL); dual-zone climate control; leather seats; power front seats with driver memory; running boards; body cladding; upgraded stereo system; and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. The Limited adds monochromatic paint; 18-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels; rear parking sensor; wood and leather-trimmed steering wheel; perforated leather seats with front heating and cooling; power-adjustable pedals; and power rear-quarter windows. The King Ranch models are basically the Limited, but with their own 18-inch machined aluminum wheels with King Ranch center caps, and Western fine-grain leather seating in all rows.

Options on the 2008 Ford Expedition include power-folding running boards; rear-view camera; power liftgate; convenience package; heated and cooled seats; second-row captain's chairs; and a third-row power-folding seat (on XLT and XLT EL). In addition, a 4x4 off-road package is available on XLT (skid plates and black tubular step bars), while 4x4 skid plates (transfer case and fuel tank) are also available, except on Limited. A heavy-duty trailer towing package with Class IV trailer hitch receiver is available on all models. Wheel choices run the gamut from the 17-inch aluminum wheels standard on XLT and XLT EL; to 18-inch optional aluminum wheels (standard on Eddie Bauer EL); 18-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels (standard on Limited and Limited EL); 18-inch machined aluminum wheel with King Ranch center cap (standard on both King Ranch editions); and 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels.

Designed by hip-hop artist, Funkmaster Flex, the special limited-edition Funkmaster Flex Expedition features custom 2-tone Colorado Red and Black paint with Orange pinstriping; 3D body kit (custom fascia, integral fog lamps, side skirts, rear fascia and trailer hitch cover); Sirius satellite radio; Funkmaster Flex chrome badges on 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels; revised interior with matching Colorado Red center console bezel, shifter and switch bezels; plus quad captain's seats with black leather trim, red stitching, and Funkmaster Flex logo head restraints. The interior also includes a red-stitch steering wheel and armrest center console; Funkmaster Flex floormats; and a numbered plaque signed by Funkmaster Flex. Other options are the same as available with Explorer Limited, including a 340-watt Audiophile sound system; MP3 player, audio input jack; Ford's PowerFold third-row seat; air suspension; and rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

Only one engine is available on all 2008 Ford Expeditions: the 5.4-liter 3 valves per cylinder (3V) SOHC V-8 that produces 300 hp at 5000 rpm and 365 lb.-ft. of torque at 3750 rpm. Power is transferred through a class-exclusive 6-speed automatic overdrive transmission. There are two gas tank capacities: 28 gallons on XLT, Eddie Bauer, Limited and King Ranch; and 33.5 gallons on XLT-EL, Eddie Bauer EL, Limited EL and King Ranch EL. Two-wheel drive is standard, with optional 4WD available. Ford's ControlTrac 4x4 system is also available. A 3.31 non-limited-slip axle is standard, with a 3.73 non-limited-slip axle available as an option. EPA fuel economy estimates are 12 mpg city/18 mpg highway for regular-length Expeditions. EL versions are not rated by the EPA due to weight and vehicle classifications.

Standard and available safety items on the 2008 Expedition include Ford's Advanced Trac with Roll Stability Control (RSC); Safety Canopy (including front-seat air bags; side-impact air bags; and large second-generation side curtain air bags for all outboard passengers in all three rows); rear-view camera; and reverse sensing system. In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2008 Ford Expedition and Expedition EL received a 5-star rating for frontal driver and front passenger crash tests; side crash tests indicate "to be rated." In rollover testing, both models received a 3-star rating for 2WD and a 4-star rating for 4WD.

For 2008, the Ford Expedition offers a variety of sound and entertainment systems. Standard on XLT and XLT-XL is the base AM/FM stereo with single CD; audio jack; 6 premium speakers; driver-adjustable speed-compensated volume; and an RDS-equipped radio with a 160-watt peak. The AM/FM Audiophile stereo (with in-dash, 6-disc and audio auxiliary jack, clock, 6 premium speakers plus sub-woofers in a 340-peak watt system with driver-adjustable speed-compensated volume and RDS-equipped) is standard on Eddie Bauer and Eddie Bauer EL and optional on LTD-EL, King Ranch and King Ranch EL. An MP3 audio input jack on the IP is standard. An AM/FM premium stereo with in-dash, 6-CD with clock and audio auxiliary jack, 6 premium speakers (160 watts peak), driver-adjustable speed-compensated volume and MP3 is optional on XLT and XLT-EL).
