Exterior Features
The 2012 Ford Expedition is a full-size truck-based SUV that shares a platform with the Ford F-150 pickup. The Expedition is available in two chassis lengths, with the extended-length EL model measuring 15 inches longer than the standard chassis. Both models are available in four trims: XL, XLT, Limited and King Ranch. Two-wheel drive (2WD) is standard, with 4-wheel drive (4WD) available on all trims. The base model features 17-inch wheels, automatic headlights, fog lights, keyless entry, roof rack, and running boards. The XLT upgrades to 18-inch alloy wheels. The Limited has 20-inch alloy wheels and a power liftgate, while the King Ranch trim adds a two-tone exterior. Properly equipped, the Expedition's towing capacity is 9,200 pounds.

Interior Features
Standard on the base 2012 Ford Expedition are cloth upholstery, 6-speaker audio system, air conditioning, and some power accessories. The XLT adds a third-row seat, power-adjustable pedals, Bluetooth connectivity, and satellite radio. The Limited trim features leather upholstery, tow package, dual-zone automatic climate control, automatic wipers, premium sound system, and more power accessories that include a power-folding third-row seat. The King Ranch trim adds styling touches, including premium leather upholstery. With all seats up, the standard-length Expedition provides 18.6 cubic feet of cargo space, or 42.6 cubic feet with the EL chassis. With all rear seats folded down, cargo space is 108.3 cubic feet for the standard-length model and 130.8 cubic feet for the EL.

Optional Features
Many upper-trim features are available on lower trims. Also optional are a sunroof, navigation system, rear-seat entertainment system, and upgraded towing package.

Under the Hood
The 2012 Ford Expedition's standard engine is a 5.4-liter V-8 rated at 310 horsepower and 365 lb.-ft. of torque that works with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy figures for the 2012 Ford Expedition are:
- Expedition 2WD: 14/20/16 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- Expedition 4WD: 13/18/15 mpg

Safety
Standard safety features on the Ford Expedition include anti-lock disc brakes, traction control, trailer-sway control, front-seat side air bags, and side curtain air bags. Other features are added to upper trims.

In government crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Expedition received 3 (out of 5) stars for rollover protection. To date, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not conducted tests on the 2012 Ford Expedition.
